It was a nice day at Walnut Creek Elementary School in Papillion,Nebraska. We were doing math and my Principal Mrs. Gunderson came into my classroom saying that there was a gas smell in the school. We got up and we went outside and when we were waiting,we tackled eachother. The Papillion Fire Department said that there was no smell. Then we went inside.

Sometimes gas can be confused with certain food products or other smells. Gas itself, has no smell. The "Gas smell" is actually added so that people won't die from exposure. Better safe than sorry!

Astynax nailed that perfectly. Just to add to it, the added aroma that is added to the gas is methyl and butyl thiols, which are the same chemicals secreted in the spray glands of a skunk. But as they are sulfur-containing chemicals, there are many food products that can emit a similar smell when it breaks down. Funny story though.

rcarter2 :
Astynax27 :
thats not technicaly true, natural gas(methane) has no smell, other gases do.
Chlorine is often in gas form, it stinks to high heaven(although i think if you smelled it you'd be more concerned with your lungs being burned out)

thenumberone : Haha. I wasn't saying ALL gasses didn't have a smell. The gas that you would get in a school (likely the chem lab gas faucets) have no smell, and they put the skunk scent in so you know there is a leak somewhere. Since this happened in his school, that was what I was limiting that over.

Nitpicking, aren't we?

I was referring to the kind of gas that would be encountered in a school.

Yeah...stuff like that happens all the time at my college. The difference is, it's usually the fire alarm that goes off, and it's usually because someone has burnt some popcorn or something. It's really aggravating.

We had to do a similar drill like that, but, like most people, it was a fire drill.  I think that is really an odd way to do a drill, because it really gets the kids thinking they are going to die.

This marking period and the last few week or two of the last marking period. My school had 2 mini fires. They were short sparks, some smoke, but no CALL DE FIRE DEPARTEMENT. The firehouse is literally across the street from my school anyway. But anyways during both evacuations, IT WAS ABOUT 26 DEGREES. THERE ARE MAYBE 1300 KIDS IN THE SCHOOL, AND YOU MAKE THEM GO OUTSIDE IN THE FREEZING COLD WITHOUT JACKETS, TWICE. I was even in gym. So there I am, in shorts and a short sleeved shirt. fml..........

You guys certainly had a lot more fire drills than at my school. We only had the drill once per year and it wasted an entire hour of our time. Having said that there was an idiot one time who set off the fire alarm during a time where some pupils were undertaking exams and forced them to have to stand around in silence whilst the teachers tried to find out who did it. Not cool!

I think it would have been a lot more convenient to pull the fire alarm in a situation like that rather than having the principal go to every classroom to tell everyone to leave the school.  I guess at my school they would ring the fire alarm.  Well at least there wasn't a real gas leak and the fire fighters said it was okay.

thenumberone :
I have been in chem labs, maintenance shops and sites, and worked with every flammable material One can think of. They all have a smell save for five. For the five I am aware of there are other signs like sweating and difficulty breathing. Some have allergies that are way more reliable than any expensive gage or meter.

As for the school drill stuff???

My instructors from elementary had Hurricane drills that resembled "Duck and Cover" from the 1950's. I kid you not. My parents laughed outloud very hard the first time I mentioned it. Later I checked out what "Duck and Cover" was and had a chuckle myself. Many of my elementary Teachers were on the verge of retiring. They had a number of odd ways about them.

Thought the info would be useful here.

Good Luck To All.
Peace.

One time, the school on a whim made us do a full blown evacuation drill. They told the teachers, and not the students, had us walk from school to where they kept the buses (a half hour walk), and then we drove back to the school. Worst. Drill. Ever. We have had a ton of holds though, when you have to stay in the classroom, even if the bell rings, because there is a kid who has seizures a lot. Like once or twice a month.

This happened to me but there was a gas leak the worst part was that we were in the gym which was right next to the leak and no one smelled the gas but one teacher so she called the principal who was the principal at 2 schools (we didn't have a prinsabull because our school was very small and there was only 2 classrooms  and 4 staff and the hole school plus the teachers could fit on a bus 2 in a seat and still have 4 rows of seats empty) and the prinsabull drive to our school and gave us all gas masks and told us to leave the building we ended up having the next 2 weeks off from school so they could fix the leak

the worst part was that this was in kindergarten
