Sheryl Maloy: The Road to Forgiveness
What would you say to the drunk driver who killed your child? Sheryl Maloy shares her journey of forgiveness over the loss of her ex-husband and daughter.

Full Transcript
On March 25, 2000, Washington State Patrol received several calls that a pickup was going the wrong way down the freeway. Approximately 30 minutes later, Danny Davis and his 12- year- old daughter, LaShell, were traveling down I-90 directly in the path of Audrey Kishline, the driver of the pickup.

Danny and LaShell were driving behind an SUV, unable to see the oncoming pickup until it was too late. The SUV swerved to avoid hitting the truck, leaving Danny no time to react. The one-ton pickup slammed into Danny’s silver and blue Dodge.

Audrey was found unconscious, not wearing her seatbelt and a half-empty vodka bottle sat beside her in the front seat. Her blood alcohol registered at .26, three times the legal limit. Ironically, Audrey was the founder of Moderation Management, a self-help movement for people with drinking problems.

Rescue workers worked more than six hours to remove Danny and LaShell from the crumpled vehicle. The entire front end of the car was smashed like an accordion, and the front seat was pushed into the trunk section of the car. The impact of the crash pushed Danny’s car backward about 50 feet.

Audrey was in prison for three months when Sheryl visited her on February 4, 2001. Before Sheryl spoke, tears were falling down Audrey’s face. Sheryl drew close and threw her arms around Audrey.

“I forgive you, Audrey,” Sheryl said.

Audrey began sobbing and fell into Sheryl’s arms.

“I knew from the moment I heard the news about Danny and LaShell’s crash I would forgive Audrey,” says Sheryl. “I did not want to be a roadblock for Audrey to feel unworthy of God’ love and acceptance. Forgiving Audrey was an easy decision. It was the right thing to do.”

So many people thought she was wrong to forgive the woman who caused her so much pain. During their visit, Sheryl asked Audrey if she had accepted the Lord as her personal Savior. Thankfully, Audrey said, "Yes."

The day after Audrey finished her parole, she asked her lawyer to contact Sheryl. One afternoon in August 2005, Audrey called Sheryl. They talked for hours. Audrey mentioned she wanted to write a book.

“I suggested we pray about it, that we ask God for His guidance,” says Sheryl.

After many hours of reflection, the ladies decided that the book was something they had to do together.

“It was important that both sides of our story be shared so we could give a greater understanding to a wider variety of people who are searching in their own lives,” says Sheryl.

Sheryl says she found great solace in her faith and comfort through her Bible studies and prayer groups. She says that life is a long journey and that she’s rebuilding her strength by drawing from her day to day experiences since the crash.

“No matter what happens in life, I now know, without any doubt, that you must keep seeking and searching for ways to make it better to overcome life’s challenges,” says Sheryl.

She reminds us that the Bible is clear about forgiveness. "Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as Christ forgave you." (Ephesians 4:31-32)

“God gave me the ability to obey Him and forgive Audrey,” says Sheryl. “I don’t look at Audrey and see a murderer. I see a woman who had a lot of things go wrong in her life. I see a woman who, like me, has made a few wrong choices along the way. I see a woman who needed Jesus in her life.”
