I don't know what a hipster is and yet they are an ever growing population, I hear there are many in Europe and here too, but what are they?

I am sorry to be vague, I think it is something to so with fashion but I can't be sure, does anyone have any pictures or links I could check out?

Well, according to Urban Dictionary:

"Hipsters are a subculture of men and women typically in their 20's and 30's that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter... Although "hipsterism" is really a state of mind,it is also often intertwined with distinct fashion sensibilities. Hipsters reject the culturally-ignorant attitudes of mainstream consumers, and are often be seen wearing vintage and thrift store inspired fashions, tight-fitting jeans, old-school sneakers, and sometimes thick rimmed glasses..."

Hope that answers you're question.

I hate hipsters they're generally douchy people that wear grandma style clothing and hate anything mainstream. They're the biggest insult to society.

Hipsters are ironic, because they hate the mainstream... yet they are now mainstream.

The only real problem that I have with Hipsters is that they think that if you are not just like them, you are inferior. They are just another new social group though, and soon they will fade into obscurity like the rest.

The word "Hipster" always pissed me off. Same with "meme" I'm not so sure that the definition on Urban Dictionary is correct. "Witty Banter" and intelligence seem in short supply when they are in groups. Sounds more like that's what they want people to view them as, when in reality most people expect the opposite.

"Hipster" is an odd concept, really. There's no official standard for it other than to dislike the mainstream; I find that all the other properties people list tend to be more stereotyping than anything. I also find the term being used as an insult much more often than as a legitimate classification of a social group. The term is even more misused than "emo," perhaps. What started as a word for people following 1950's beatnik tradition and rejecting social norms has become a term for anyone who seems arrogant and eccentric. I have met very few people who actually claim to be hipsters. Who hipsters are and what they look like tend to depend on who's defining them... For example, Choko453 might be considered a hipster for her knowledge of relatively obscure bands, yet she considers certain OTHER people to be hipsters. There is a chain of hipster-accusations, lol.

Sorry if this was a bit unorganized, it's just how I roll sometimes. If anyone wants, I can link to some articles or webcomics about the subject.

EDIT: Here is a webcomic I feel is relevant to my point: http://dustinland.com/archives/archives464.html

hipster (also referred to as scenesters[1]) is a term frequently used to refer to a subculture of young, recently settled urban middle classadults and older teenagers. Usage of the term reappeared in the 1990s and persists to the present. The subculture is associated withindependent music, a varied non-mainstream fashion sensibility, and alternative lifestyles. Interests in media would include independent film, magazines such as Vice and Clash, and websites like Pitchfork Media.[2]
Hipster culture has been described as a "mutating, trans-Atlantic melting pot of styles, tastes and behavior."[2] Christian Lorentzen of Time Out New York argues that "hipsterism fetishizes the authentic" elements of all of the "fringe movements of the postwar era—beat, hippie, punk, even grunge," and draws on the "cultural stores of every unmelted ethnicity," and "regurgitates it with a winking inauthenticity."[3]Others, like Arsel and Thompson, argue that hipster signifies a cultural mythology, a crystallization of a mass-mediated stereotype generated to understand, categorize, and marketize indie consumer culture, rather than an objectified group of people.[4]

Everyone hates the mainstream definition of hipsters: they are usually douchey and outspoken about it, and their style of dress is usually recognizable out of a crowd.  Above all, they think liking things that other people don't know about makes them better than everyone else.

However, you can't judge any group (even a subculture) by its majority.  SOME hipsters (unfortunately few) legitimately appreciate the culture that they follow, listening to obscure music because they LIKE it, not because it's obscure.  There's a sense of individuality involved, and they might feel that their individuality is threatened when the things they identify with catch on in popular culture.

The cool-hipster minority gets way overshadowed by the douche hipsters, which is sad.

"I'd tell you but it's so underground you wouldn't understand." - Hipster

Everyone else already gave you the answer I would have written so I decided to write that.

Hipsters have ruined thrift stores for me. If I wear old clothing people think I'm trying to be trendy, but really I'm just trying to own cheap clothing. Also f**k you, I don't play my grey brick Game Boy to be ironic, I play it because my DS doesn't play Game Boy games, and the grey brick has a longer battery life.

But if you really get upset at these douchers, it's like letting them win.

And don't forget: "I was into that band before they were mainstream." - Hipster

Totts : If you hear someone say that, you are likely talking to a hipster; beware it doesn't rub off on you. (Kidding of course, they are just like any other subculture: all the other subcultures think they're annoying).

In my opinion, a hipster is a sad attempt to stand out from the crowd. They refuse to believe what they do is common to most people --referred to as "mainstream." I will give them credit, some things that were uncommon could fit into the hipster style, such as fashion and music, but because of the media attention --mainly over the Internet-- their style has become part of today's norm. This creates the paradox that shows how hypocritical any of us are at trying to be different. We really are an enormous collection of individuals, but we have a lot more in common than we may first think.

I think hipster means a cross between a hippie and a gangster. They just like to get unnecessary attention. The hipsters are growing tribe of people trying to seem like they are they new big thing. They try to act "cool" and they like old and obscure things. For example, if there find out about some rare NES game, like Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom, they'll go tell EVERY ONE of their friends about how it is. There's not many true hipsters left, just a group of impostors.
