I grant you that this is a custom designed forum, but my request is something that comes standard on so many. Here is an example to explain:

I sign up to some forum that uses IPB, or phpBB software. On the forum, I view "Random Topic About Nothing" which is at that moment 12 pages long. I read through all 12 pages of posts and leave. A month later, I go back to the forum for the first time and can see that the topic has new posts, indicated by the "NEW" image in the forum as well as the "View new posts" link at the top of the page. The topic is now 30 pages long, but so much time has passed that I don't remember when I was here last and I forgot it was only 12 pages back then.

On those boards, you click the "NEW" image and you jump directly to the first post created since your previous visit. Once you click a link "Mark forum as read," this resets and the last posts that exist at the moment that link is clicked and starts the process over.

On THIS forum, when you see that there are new posts, you have to guess where the last posts were that you read. If you visited a day or two ago then it's obvious, but not over any length of time... and even by looking through a lot of topics per visit it can be confusing.

It's an interesting idea, and can see where it would be helpful.

I have no idea the amount of work that would go into it, but there's only one person on site who touches board code, and he's very busy right now, so it probably wouldn't be done for a long time even if he wanted to do it.

I personally wouldn't mind a new feature like this, although I come on every day and rarely lose my spot, however, for users who aren't able to get on every day this would be an interesting new way to keep up.

I was thinking we already have this, but then I thought about it and I think I realized what you're getting at.

Take the Ask Geeogree Anything! thread. There are currently 368 pages of posts (that's over 7300 posts). It also gets posted in fairly regularly.

In every forum, there is a link titled, "Mark forum read." If you click that link, then it will mark every thread in that forum as if you already read them. Next time, if there have been any new posts, the threads that have been posted in will be marked as new. That way you know to check them.

My guess is that your idea is that there is an extra link that takes you to the post that came right after either your last post or after the last post you marked as read (I'm not sure which). That would come in handy for a thread like geeo's since it gets posted in a lot. Finding the post where you left off would be pretty tricky.

I like it, but I don't know when there will be time for the owner to make up something like that.

When I suggested you make a thread about this idea, I wasn't sure if it could really catch on here. But the more I thought about the users who aren't on everyday, and when the example of Ask Geeogree Anything thread, it makes more and more sense to me. Maybe down the line when the current priorities are finished, and David is looking for some more feature ideas, this can but put into the mix.

This would be fairly handy, but would not be seen for some time as you've seen by the ^ posts.

He sort of has things done in a priority fashion, so most of the major things are being taken care of. Once he gets time to move on to smaller issues and new features, I'm sure this is a viable feature to be brought up

Yes, that is what I mean. Between the two choices that you aren't sure about, the one that I mean is the latter: jumping to the post "after the last post you marked as read."  And you gave the perfect example as to why I have always loved this feature on other boards.

Of course I am not expecting anything to be done "now" or even "ever." But, as in this case, it's an example of something that has probably not been considered before or at least likely not publicly suggested before.

This was something I proposed multiple times in the past, actually. I would be fully supportive of it because it's always annoying trying to find where you've left off in a thread. It would be especially good for Mafia threads and the like. :/

It's a good idea but it might be a while before I get to coding it since I've got a lot of stuff to do with higher priority at the moment. If I forget to implement it, suggest it to me again in the future.
