It depends. If I'm not near a computer or dictionary, I tend to just infer the meaning from how the word is being used, the words around it, and so on. However, I tend to have a pretty good idea of what it means or at least how to use it before I look it up.

The only time I recall looking in the dictionary for words I don't know the meaning of is when I can't tell what the meaning of it is based off the context in which it is used. Usually, you know what it means even if you have never heard it before just by how it is used.

I do this fairly often. Whenever I see a word whose meaning I don't know, I first observe the context it is in. If it happens to be something I can tell is mostly used on the Internet, I will look it up on Urban Dictionary. If it is something that would be used in real life conversations and whatnot, I'll look it up on Dictionary.com.
