So, very few people know about this but I need to get it off my chest somewhere safe.

So, I got a job back in February of 2011. Except it wasn't just a job it was a work to own sort of situation. I paid a hefty amount of money to buy into the company and become a partner.

Things went well until the beginning of June where things started to not go so well for the company. Then near the end of June I was sent to more or less wrap up the beginning portion of a project. However, instead of getting things wrapped up.... they blew up. The vice-president of this company went crazy on me when I told him what the budget numbers were looking like. Not really my fault.... that's just the way things were at that moment.

So, that projects blows up which means thousands of dollars of revenue that are now stalled because this guy is pissed. I'm doing most of my work on this project that just blew up so my source of income is now drying up. First week of July I'm told to stop coming in to work because there is nothing for me to work on anymore now that this project is stalled.

Then at the end of the second week of July I'm told that I'm being laid off so I can get unemployment benefits.

Oh, I almost forgot.... the guy didn't pay me at the end of June like he was supposed to so not only did I get laid off but I also hadn't been paid for over 5 weeks. Things were not going well between me and this guy.

So, I "get fired" and start looking for a new job. In the meantime I apply for benefits and start waiting. 3-4 weeks go buy (early-mid August) and I'm wondering what's taking so long. I call in and find out that my boss made an error on his submission of my hours and listed me as working 4.5 hours instead of the correct amount. So, I have to go back to this former boss to let him know he made a mistake and he needs to fix it. So I wait another week to get the paperwork from him... then another week or 2 before benefits start rolling in (early September). Thankfully I was able to get caught up on everything because it's paid retroactively from when you apply, not when you're approved...

However, the real problem I'm having is getting my investment back... just to make things clear I'm out XX,XXX.xx which is all in debt that I'm currently holding but not being able to pay off right now. Which means I'm also compounding interested onto that debt. This has been the major stress for the last few months. The guy won't buy me out because he has no good reason to. He's not out anything.

Now for the light at the end of the tunnel.... I talked to him today and he said he has someone else who wants to do what I was going to do (buying into the company and working to take it over) and he asked if my portion was for sale. Of course it is you moron! The point though.... I might have a way out finally after 2 months of trying to figure this situation out. So close!

This is pretty cool news, and I hope it's your way out. You and I have talked about stress, and I really think this will relieve a LOT of stress, and make things easier on you and your family.

It's always good to let it out. It's true when they say that it's always darkest before dawn. Unbelievable how many mistakes the boss made. Good luck with it all!

Hope that you can get through this all right! I have never been in this situation and I hope that I never am. I do have a question though. What kind of project was this? I do not really want to know specifics just the general field in which it was in.

billythekidmonster : I was finalizing stuff for a training project in MWD/Directional Drilling. It's oil and gas stuff.

geeogree : Hmm not to sound stupid or blunt or anything but isn't that whole oil thing kind of failing right now? Business is booming but seems to be more of a Middle East thing to me.

Well it is good that you have finally vented your frustrations a bit. Even better that you have a chance at getting yourself out of the gutter. Is your good-for-nothing "partner" capable of pulling the rug out from under you at this point? Because if he is, let us hope he does not.

billythekidmonster : oil prices are up around $100 per barrel.... at that price business is always booming.

AuraBlaze : he could at any moment... but I'm hoping he's smart enough to realize that keeping me as a partner long term is going to be more of a pain than it's worth.

geeogree : Yes but like I said most of it comes from the middle east and theirs would be cheaper than yours because they are foreign out put. Either way it just did not seem like the best idea to me... we went through the schematics of how to make it in that industry just today and they do not look good.

I really hope that this turns out to be the end of this ongoing monstrosity of a problem. You mentioned you were getting unemployment benefits, which helps for now. Are there any good prospects in your search for work? You deserve it after going through all that.

billythekidmonster : I mean this in the nicest way possible.... you don't know what you're talking about. The companies we were doing work for produce a millions dollars+ per day. I'm not sure what environmentalist, wing-nut you were listening to but there is still a LOT of money to be made in Oil and Gas.

geeogree : That is not my point. We were talking about the chances of BECOMING one of those companies if you got into it now. We were not talking about if you already were one. I am very aware that if you are one that it is very easy to make money, but if you want to be a big company like that chances are you won't be... That is what I am getting at...

I don't really care about that.... because it's moot point. We work WITH those companies.... we're not trying to BE one.

I'm getting my money back at the end of this month! The guy has finally agreed to buy me out and let me not be a partner anymore!

Such a relief. Hopefully he sticks to his word. =/

In fact.... I've felt like I needed to get this resolved before I would be able to move on with life. I'm really hoping this is a chance to move on and get back on my feet.
