It was made when notifications didn't even exist, having it send a pm was really the only way to notify people of a new comment at the time.

Right now, when someone makes a profile comment I get a notification AND a PM. Getting both is kinda pointless. The purpose of the thread is to ask if you can remove the feature that sends the PM. The notifications are already there, so they wouldn't need to be added.
