Although it is a hard choice to make, I would have to say Family Guy. Sure, the talking Goldfish (why did he have to be called Claus? And his scales colour looks like the hair of ginger.... ='[) is very funny, and a Dad working in the FBI (CIA?) with an alien living with them makes a very funny family condition for lots of jokes to be made. But Family Guy is just, somehow, funnier. A diabolical baby seeking to take over the world, odd cut-scene that are there for no reason (when they normally describe something and then it is just there for our amusement), and Peter fighting a giant chicken for excessive amounts of time, Family Guy has it all. American Dad has all that too (in some respect), but it's just a different style. I think I just prefer the style to Family Guy.

Honestly, there is no real difference. The only major difference is the personalities of the actual characters. Since the shows are both created by the exact same guy, all the humor, jokes, and such, are all of the same variety and taste. Many people just prefer Family Guy because it is just so much more "random", as it were.

   Since they are made by the same person, Seth Macfarlane, they are incredibly similar in so many areas it's hard to count. Stan Smith, Carter Pewterschmidt, and Dr. Elmer Hartman all have the same voice. I do think that Seth puts more effort into Family Guy than American Dad though, so I like Family Guy better. I will still watch them both along with the Cleveland Show and enjoy them all.

I enjoy both, but American Dad gives me a mix of Simpsons and Family Guy like comedy. American Dad and Simpsons focus on character development (mostly anyway) and have a lesson to be learned. Old Family Guy had that too, but most of the newer episodes are just silly comedy .Once and awhile, we'll get a little character development from Family Guy, but usually it gets turned into an unsatisfying joke. I still like Family Guy, just feels like they are more hit-or-miss these days. American Dad's newer episodes are leaning that way too, but not too far from where they can turn back from.
