I would say the best characters are the most important thing for an anime. I always love associating myself with the characters, and if there isn't one that I love in an anime, then I tend to... not watch it.

It has to be the plot, its the most crucial part to me, and without it the entire thing would seem !"$$£%£%" to me.
But characters, voice actors etc are all good bonus's.

I would say a mixture of them all. I absolutely hate seeing stereotypical artwork, characters, plot, and without nothing special that it adds to the genre. In a way originality prevails but it is nothing without a solid set of characters behind it and I HATES seeing the prototypical archetypes in a manga/anime.

I believe in order for a manga to be good it needs to have all subjects stated because if you leave one of the subjects out it feels as though the manga is missing something

It needs pretty much everything stated above. Without having a well made storyline, plot, characters, and artwork, the anime just isn't quite as interesting as it should be. And it would not be able to live up to its full potential.

People say it's not about the animation, it's about the story but if the animation is bad or practically non-existent (I.E most episodes of naruto. freeze frames [ )Then there's no point in it being and animation. It may as well just be a manga.

Generally it's good to have a strong balance of traits, and having one particularly strong strand may make up for a weakness in another department.

For example, one manga I read I started reading for a single character alone. The character is fantastic, though the plot is somewhat lacking.

I think the most important thing in an anime or manga is the story and its characters. The story has to be simple and innovative, but not complex and the characters have to be unique in different ways (looks, attitude, etc) and a little humor is also good too

I'd say both the characters and the plot. Art has something to do with it, but it doesn't make an overall difference though. Take code geass for example, the plot was amazing; if Lelouch was a bunny rabbit though, then the whole thing would be an epic fail. XD

Well I picked all for anime. I'm a bit picky when it comes to me being drawn into a particular anime. This may sound close-minded but if an anime has a really good story, but sub par animation, then I won't watch it. I'm sorry but I can't take an anime seriously if the artwork is crappy. The characters have to be interesting and not annoying. The story has to be at least good (it doesn't have to be at a best-seller novel level). The plot can't be too confusing to the point where it makes me go "Wtf" and I'm forced to go online to find out exactly what's going on.
