Well the best answer is four billion years ago when the planets formed and that stuff. Earth can probably survive another six BILLION years. Humans survive only about 85 years average. So, I guess I just gave the best answer probably.

I personally have no idea how old the Earth is, although I'm sure a google could fix this, but then I'm not a scientist and I have more important personal information to keep track of than the age of the planet. I do believe what the scientists say so I will be fine with what number they come up with.

Elara : I know it's been forever since you posted this, but I'd like to respond. I saw a video during school recently showing that an animal had died around a hundred years earlier (it was an experiment, they buried the animal) and after a hundred years unburied it and tested it using carbon dating. The result wasn't 100 years, or even anything close to that. The result from the carbon dating was around 1.5 billion years! I'd say that was a little off.

I am, as many know, a Christian. Therefore, I tend to believe the Bible. I believe that the earth is between 7,000 and 10,000 years old.

I'm gonna have to go with the quite logical answer of 4 to 5 Billion years old. However, I believe that time itself has been going on much longer. When you really think about it, our existence really is only a recent thing to happen, Nya~.

I don't understand why this is such a hotly debated topic. No matter your religious beliefs once should not turn a blind eye to the fact that SCIENCE has proven the approximate age of the earth time and time again.

around 4.5 billion years old

Yesterday, in Zoology we did something with Darwin and it said the Earth was about 4.5 billion years old. It's pretty cool to watch a video about how the Earth was created because its got volcanoes that blow up the rock and transform Earth and its inhabitants.

We have only existed for the past 2 million years.

The Earth is 4.5 billion years old, and still has a good 5 billion left in it.

I've heard the 4.5 billion figure a lot from reliable sources, so I'm pretty inclined to go with that. I'm not sure where the "2013 years" theory comes from--even from a religious perspective, AD means "anno domini," or "in the year of our Lord," meaning after the birth of Jesus. And as we know, Jesus was born, he didn't just pop into existence with no warning. So it's quite obviously older than that, even going from a purely religious perspective.

That said, the fact of the matter is that it's been scientifically proven that the earth is far older than a few thousand years old. A "theory" doesn't mean "guess"--it's far more complicated than that. Strictly speaking, gravity is a theory as well. (I really hate it when people misuse words...)

alexanyways :

Homo erectus left Africa around 2 million years ago. Modern human appeared around 200.000 years ago.

Somebody knowing better and acuratly can correct me, but I am pretty sure on this.

The earth is only a few thousand years old because of the following

#1 The goverment was watching the great barrier reef grow for 20 years, the figured out that according to the current growth rate that the reef could only be 4,200 Years of age (I don't think that you could go back much further to before the flood you know and still have that reef)

#2 The saharah desert is big, but How big is it? it is 3,629,000 sq miles. Deserts get bigger as the expand according to the wind. So that means that it once was smaller! (who can get this far without any outside help at all) So there was a time when there was No desert!

my question is, if the earth is here for millions of years. . . then why aren't there bigger deserts

#3 why are there so few people on the earth? if man was to start out 10,000 years ago why aren't there more people on earth we went from 1 billion in 1810 to 7 billion in 203 years!

#4 Studies over the last 140 years show that the magnetic field has been declining, that means that the field was much stronger. Go back 25,000 years and the heat would be to great for life to exsist.

#5 why do we find coal  with human atrifacts in it? it though it took 'millions of years' for the coal to form?

Because there are these problems to the theory of evolution I can't believe it.

The best scientific estimate it at 4.5 G years. Is it accurate? I can't tell. However, it certainly wasn't created when the Babylonians invented beer (6k years ago)
