Honestly, who owns a computer and doesn't know where the control pad is? How did he administrative his account?!

I've been in the same position as you, but it wasn't necessarily computer related. I tend to get frustrated when people can't understand what seems like basic concepts, but you have to remember that everyone's a newbie at one point or another, even yourself. The best thing I try to do is stay calm and guide them step by step.

But to not know where your start menu is... it must've been their first time touching a computer or something.

I am a very patient person. I understand that people don't think the same way that I do and that if what we consider to be baby steps is confusing them, then you need to crawl next to them. Many people with practically no knowledge of computers had no choice but to start using them when a company began incorporating them. The same is true for people who are desperate for a job, whatever it is, and get thrown into this world that they understand nothing about. In both cases, the business training seminars are severely lacking for those people.

I am self employed having worked from my home through almost my entire career as both an IT and a networking administrator for both homes and local small and large businesses. While the generation below me grew up with computer toys in their cribs, there are many people at 60 who had never touched a computer before, and it IS a complicated piece of equipment. It's like learning a second language for many. Even step-by-step can be a struggle if you don't have the knack for it.

You know the "CD ROM cup holder story?" I've heard it once along with many more, "What is that for anyway?" I've had people jam door keys into USB drives, their business key card or driver's license into the floppy drive, and I even had one who kept a word processing program running for several days straight with a document open because he didn't have a printer and didn't understand how the "Save" feature worked. (He saved, came back another day and the file was "gone" because he expected it to work like a paper notebook in that you open the program and the page would be right there again.)

My step mom is one of those people she doesn't even know about note pad or the calculator app on the computer.  Forget about knowing how to use control panel! She now has a smart phone so she doesn't have to deal with those things lol!  At one point she thought she still had to pay for dial up internet when we switched over to cable....

How the heck do you NOT know where your control panel is?! 

I know that there are some computer unfriendly people out there, and that is just the way things are right now because they didn't grow up with it. But what I don't get is how someone THAT computer unfriendly gets hired at an office where computer use is a part of the job. What is worse is that that company apparently hired a whole staff that bad as nobody could figure out how to access email before calling the IT guy. Seriously. 

Tech support is judged by how fast and efficiently you can help or problem solve issues for the other party. If you were on phone for 10 mins and the problem could not be resolved, that means you failed at your job not the other way around. It's not the customers job to know where stuff is, that is your job.

How does this person not know where the control panel is? Well in case no one here noticed, every application has a control panel there is not just one control panel. This person got lost because they were provided with confusing directions simple as that.

Most companies that require basic computer work require basic application knowledge that is their job. Their job is to not mess around with the computer settings that is why companies have a thing called tech support to help with advanced issues involving computer settings.

JigSaw : If the customer worked in a field requiring even basic computer knowledge, he would know where the control panel is. I found it in literally 5 seconds, and I'm 13!

warmaker : There are plenty of stupid people in the world. It's all right to criticize them for being stupid, as it is their own fault. Someone who is stupid has not bothered to take the time to learn how to do it and yet they do it anyway, that is why we call them stupid. If you don't want to call them stupid because you think it's offensive, don't call them stupid. Just don't criticize others for speaking the truth.

It would sound like something you would find next to a circuit board to a much older person, but anyone under 35 has no excuse! lol.

Generalizing people based on few things doesn't work well.

By your definition, Leonardo Da Vinci was stupid because he sure can't find anything on a computer.  Also, the Amish could never find anything with a computer but they can survive if society ends.

And besides, Iv'e had no experience with using the control panel or even finding it, and I did something with no prior experience in 5 seconds. someone who's job it is to know this kind of stuff should be able to find it easily. Leonardo Da Vinci wasn't stupid, and he couldn't be considered idiotic compared to someone who had experience with a computer, as there was no such form of technology when he was around. also, not to be rude, but I do know how to fix a transmission, because my mom took an engineering class in college and taught us the basics, and I've also done a budget for business with my mom, also the Amish couldn't be considered to be stupid in that sense as it is against their religion to be associated with such technology. I don't know if you were referring to me when you said this, but for the past 3 years my mom and brother have been teaching the rest of the family about how to survive in an apocalyptic world, so in that sense I could call you foolish for not bothering to ask about that and jumping straight to conclusions.
