There are a lot of games out there I wonder how they are so freaking popular. At the same time, there are games I loved and wonder why it seems nobody else has ever even played/heard of them. In my opinion, the most overrated game is Madden (enter any year here). I am not a sports game fan in any sense, but the NFL Madden thing is the one that confuses me the most. Really, once you play one football game, you played them all. The only thing that changes each year are the players, graphics, and some new features here and there. It is still football, and it really doesn't change. Yet, there are people who spend the $60 each year to get the next version just to play the exact same game of football. If you like football games, pick one. For my most underrated game, I think the Shenmue games are the most underrated. I have stated this in other threads before. There is so much you can do, the worlds are huge, and the story is one of the best ones in game history, in my opinion. It is a good balance of exploration, story, and fighting. It isn't the typical fighting game where the fighting is so overused that it becomes super repetitive. In my opinion, the most overrated game is Madden (enter any year here). rcarter2 : can i say 2 of each?i cant really decide.
For over rated the 1st is halo, its nothing special, you can jump too high and take too much damage, this is just a receipt to throw all realism out the window.i wouldnt mind that if i found it fun,but i find it repetitive. The 2nd one is gta iv.it may have been made in the same city as i live in but it fell flat of the hype.yes the graphics are awesome but its stupid, the people take about 50 knife hits to die, they automaticaly turn around when you point a gun at there back, and it was mind numbingly repetitive. 1st underrated=dungeon keeper2,yes the graphics are lame and there are some bugs but it is just a unique and very enjoyable game. The 2nd is deus ex. Everyone i talk to knows theres a new one coming but they dont know there are 2 old ones, the first was one of the very first proper games where you could shape the outcome.i love it. You are welcome to name two or three games for each one, but only if you REALLY can't decide on top ones. As long as we don't start getting one person making lists of games on one post. I just want to make sure that one person doesn't take all the games that others might want to post about. Everyone is also more than welcome to add different games on a NEW post. That way, you let someone else get a chance to add some. |

The most overrated game I believe is Super Mario 64. It might be because I never owned it when it came out, but it didn't appeal a whole lot to me. I like adventure games where everything's connected, but in SM64, it just feels like a whole bunch of disconnected mini-stages. And the times I did play it, I got bored at around 20 stars because 120 is just too much for me to collect without some story to tie it all together. And the most underrated game would be Starfox Assault. I don't see what the big deal is with the ground missions that everyone's complaining about. Those are done fairly well, and the pace is fast enough that they're not terrible boring missions. I think the issue everyone has with this game is that they're expecting Arwings flying about and everything when it comes to Starfox. I'll admit that the scrolling Arwing missions are my favorite out of the game, but it's the entire experience that makes it one of my favorite games. If the game was made under a different name, I doubt people would be criticizing it so badly. It's definitely worth a shot, even if it's not the first thing you'd expect from a game like Starfox. /rant |

Someone70 : Finally, someone who agrees with me when it comes to Star Fox: Assault.
Most overrated would be Ocarina of TIme. It is a pretty good game, but it doesn't deserve the "best game of all time" title that many people give it. Most underrated would be Mega Man 8. What was so bad about it? (aside from the fact that it was too easy, and you could make it even easier with power-ups), The game looked great, played out great with game play, had great Robot Masters (excluding Aqua Man), had great power-ups, and had GREAT music. It holds a special place in my my childhood. Most overrated would be Ocarina of TIme. It is a pretty good game, but it doesn't deserve the "best game of all time" title that many people give it. Someone70 : I definitely understand where you are coming from with Mario 64. I did love the game, but after reading your post, I noticed one thing. I have never been able to sit down and play through it in one setting, yet I can with games that are much longer. I think it is because there are so many starts, but no further development in the story other than Bowser stole the stars and you have to get them. Great observation on your part
vizwiz123 : I agree on Mega Man 8. Especially the music. The music playing on the final battle with Dr. Wiley was epic! vizwiz123 : I agree on Mega Man 8. Especially the music. The music playing on the final battle with Dr. Wiley was epic! |

There are too many overrated games for me to almost not be able to choose. But I'll pick the one I hate the most and I'll just pick the current Call of Duty series. Seriously, Left 4 Dead is way more unique AND innovative as a shooter then those games are. In reality, why should I play the game when Counter Strike (A game I still don't play) is far more balanced in strategy? Well, Call of Duty does have a few more extra things, but in general, the game play is the exact same. You point a gun at someone and shoot. Whee. What I think is an underrated game is The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. It obviously isn't the best game, but it is completely overshadowed by it's "older brother". Majora's Mask had an insane amount of detail that Ocarina of Time lacked. It was probably one of the games in it's time with one of the best graphics, extremely dark, but unfortunately, lackluster storyline on the surface. However, the amount of back story this game had is extremely immense (Even the way it was created has a back story of itself is in depth; Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time were originally together as one game). And finally, the game was completely detailed in the way the fighting and physics worked, specifically for the final boss. They even added a fail safe feature that if SOMEHOW, you were to get out of bounds from the boss area (which can happen without cheating) that instead of falling into oblivion, and having the battle be reset, that you actually teleport back into the boss arena. How many games even have a fail safe feature like that? |

I agree with rcarter2 and thenumberone that both madden and halo are overrated, mostly for the same reasons you guys already stated. I really don't like sports games, and I like shooters but Halo has never caught my attention very much and I can't figure out why it's so popular. As for an underrated game I would have to say Hunter: the reckoning. It's for gamecube and a little old now but it's such a fun zombie shooter, and you can play co-op offline. I like the character design and the plot and characters are so cool. Definitely one of my favorite games but many people have never even heard of it. |

DeadlyxSin : I have Hunter and Hunter: the Reckoning for xbox. Pretty fun slaughter game. My only issue was the plot didn't get developed to it's full potential. Was underrated though.
I have another couple of games to submit to the list. For the overrated game, I would have to say the whole Grand Theft Auto. I know thenumberone mentioned Grand Theft Auto IV already, but I think it is worth putting the rest in there with it. I played a little bit of Grand Theft Auto III because of how popular the games were getting, and was not fond of it. Even the controls, in my opinion, kind of sucked. I figured I was done with it. Then San Andreas had a huge hype. Everyone said it was the best one and those who didn't like the others said they liked this one. So, of course, I got suckered into playing it. And just to give it the benefit of the doubt, I played all the way through. I admit they significantly improved the controls and a little bit on the story, but it was still just the same thing. I think it is only popular because it was one of the first highly talked about game where you were an everyday 'bad guy' who could commit any crimes you want, murder random people, and shoot out against the cops. Not enough to make a good game. For the underrated game, I think Evolution: World of Sacred Device was underrated. It was originally for the Dreamcast. I can't really go into the story because there is a lot to it. But it is turn based battle RPG. It was very unique and the story was super involved, developed, and simply amazing. The Gamecube made Evolution Worlds, which was basically half of the first game and all of the second game. They put them together as a long sequential story. Though the first game was a small part of it, so they made it extremely easy. The last boss of the first one took me one try, whereas it took me days on the Dreamcast version. But yeah, awesome game. I would have to say the most overrated game is the original Sonic. I never really liked it that much and it was freaking hard! If you play Sonic: The Extended version in the RGR the first boss wasn't even that hard. Of course I am a lazy gamer. *yawns*
The must underrated game I think was Star Wars for the NES. It's a great game that is very playable with a lot of replay value. There was the Jawas and the Death Star. I mean, how much cooler can you get? The must underrated game I think was Star Wars for the NES. It's a great game that is very playable with a lot of replay value. I consider Final Fantasy VII to be one of the most overhyped, and overrated games. I haven't played it yet, and plan to try it out. I'm sure it's a very well made game, but it isn't some relic that puts finding Noah's Ark to shame. No. It's a game that helped increase both the popularity of the Final Fantasy series and the popularity of RPGs.
It's a gaming achievement and everything, but it's so hyped, even the kid playing drums while eating 10 pounds of sugar is less hyped up. I'm sorry if anyone is offended, but it was going to be said. I find the game Naughty Bear to be quite underrated. It's always being called a terrible game. Yes, it has problems. Yes, it could have been better off with more polish. The thing is, though, it's a fun game. It's not amazing or anything, but it is playable and fun. Ah everyone here has such valid points! @KlawedFlaw, I'm a huge final fantasy fan myself, but I do agree that for whatever reason the seventh one gets a lot of extra attention...it definitely wasn't my favorite of the series. I also feel bad that I don't know any of these "underrated" games, because I can't agree or disagree with the posts hahah |

The series that is definitely overrated in my opinion is the Gran Turismo series. A lot of people consider this to be the best racing game/series out currently. There are many better simulation racing games, such as the Forza Motorsport series. One of the main things that bugs me about the Gran Turismo games is the release of "Gran Turismo V: Prologue". The fact that a company can release (and charge people for) a "Prologue" of a game they are releasing eventually (even after the years it took between the Prologue release and retail release). I don't see why people would pay money for essentially a demo of a game (demos are downloaded every day free) regardless of the fact that anything you unlock in the demo/prologue transfers over to the full game.
One game that is seriously underrated is Dynasty Warriors 7. A lot of people claim that it is the same game as the others and that the game-play style is bland and boring. In my opinion from time to time it is relaxing and fun to be able to play a game that isn't as complicated as many others and has one basic premise: to kill hundreds/thousands of enemies, survive the level, and defeat the opposing army. I love being able to literally run through and kill thousands of enemy soldiers at a time and not having to worry about killing someone I shouldn't, or choosing what to say in conversations in games, or having a ton of stats/items to manage. Another (older) game that was definitely underrated in its time was Downhill Domination for the Playstation 2. For those of you who haven't heard of it, it was essentially a downhill mountain bike racing game that lets you use weapons similar to that of the old Road Rash games. I first played this game as a demo (which I beat/played dozens of times) and finally found it at my local video game store. When I took it up to the counter, the cashier actually told me that the game was terrible and that if he was me he wouldn't waste his time or money on the game. I knew better and didn't listen to him and purchased the game anyway. There are essentially three types of races in the game: free ride (exactly what they sound like, huge open tracks with multiple paths to take to get to the bottom of the mountain fastest), mountain-cross (short tracks, usually full of jumps and very tight turns), and technical races (get wide at points to allow you to choose different routes such as in the free ride tracks, but tracks get very small with tight turns; precision biking is a must). It's very much worth a try. Didn't really mean for this to turn into a mini-review of Downhill Domination, but I believe that's what has happened haha. Most overrated is Halo, it's a space shooter, like Metroid Prime before it, it's nothing special, but people think it's gold.
Most underrated is, I'd also say Shenmue, so many possibilities, so advanced for the time, it's one of those games that could have made the Dreamcast last longer, if Sony didn't push them out of the picture. I'm gonna take a swipe at one of the game with one of the most rabid fan bases of all times, just like Flaw did.
FF7 was not the best game of all time. Yes, it was good but if you look up some of the reviews, the game just wasn't THAT special. I know this next part may seem inevitable, but I think one of the most underrated games of all time is Persona 4. I know everyone that reads this is thinking that Bobby is just being a fan boy again, but I am serious about this game being great. The SMT games are huge over in Japan but their popularity is just not that high in the US. This game has everything I like in a game, great plot, great music, and interesting characters. If you think you can handle a game with mature situations and you can play for 80+ hours on just the first run through the game, Try SMT: Persona 4. You won't be disappointed.
