Recently Nintendo has announced that they are going to be releasing a new console some time in 2012. This console is expected to be HD and will have much more power than the Wii.
I have several questions:
What do you think it will be exactly? A Wii2 or a whole new system?
Do you think it will have gimmicks, and if so, what would you expect?
Would you be willing to drop your current console(s) if it meant getting your hands one one of these?

To answer my own questions (because why not) I have to say it will be a completely different console than Wii. It should be different considering it's amped up hardware. Not only that, but it should also focus on "hardcore" games, and most likely will. Nintendo says that they believe the Wii will still be selling in the thousands well after the release of their new system, and it will still be geared toward "casual" gamers. That leaves one option, and I am optimistic about it. If it did have a gimmick, I wouldn't be able to guess. I'm sure there is plenty that hasn't been done, but right now, i'm unsure. It will need something to keep it apart from the Xbox 360 (also may be getting a new console) and the PS3. Considering the only other console I own is a Wii, i would definitely trade up.

Nintendo is not known for "hard-core" games, nor will they ever be. I realize they have made a few Mature titles but their money is in cutesy games for kids.

Bobbynibbles : Not really. I'm 13 and I still love Mario.

I'm looking forward to see what the gimmick is.

I, personally, have been with nintendo systems. they tend not to make T or M games. They make more family friendly, which is why I like them. If they make something like the Xbox connect thing....I'll find that silly. I think they got the good stuff, the Wii. Why would you need to be the remote?

P.S. I hate all other systems....especially Xbox...because it has tapped into the Wii system and stole information to make this "Connect" thing....So I hate it...just hate it.

But if Nintendo makes something like that...I'm not getting it....I have a Wii and that suits me fine

Bobbynibbles : Okay, if they make ONLY "cutesy games" then explain the following:
Legend of Zelda
Star Fox
Metroid
Super Smash Bros.
F-Zero
Pokemon
Once you've explained all those to me, tell me what a "hardcore" game is to you.

jessmn2 : I....am very personal about T and M games....I call M games "Rated M for UN-mature!" I flee...yes flee...from all T and M games....I ONLY play E games...and that is all I care for

And the games you listed....The only reason (in my view) they are what they are...is so they could get business from your "hardcore gamers".

Speedic : But at the same time, they are the ORIGINAL Nintendo games. As far as i'm aware, all those were made before the use of terms like "hardcore" and "casual" were made. They were even made before the internet. So, they aren't what they are to get business from a certain group of people, but because of their lineage and what is expected of them.

Please someone define 'hardcore' and 'casual' games.
IMO, might be wrong though, casual is for sports games or Guitar Hero, or whatever, but hardcore is the real 'game' where you have levels and a plot/story/etc. lolz if I'm wrong.

tRIUNE : No, that's about right
Let's put it this way: Casual games are games you can play without focusing much, and usually with little to no need to know controls. It doesn't make you think as much.
Hardcore is more difficult and has more of a point. The controls are a bit more difficult and it's usually much harder.

In this case, I'm not sure about gimmicks if any, but I think it might be a whole new console like an SNES 2, instead of a Wii 2. If this is the case, for sure I'd jump on it and work some overtime, not sure about trading in my current stuff, but yeah it would be a major highlight for me if they incorporated the oldschool into their new console.

derek12max : Not lying, it's getting released in 2012, as in next year. So, no new console now, but they will be debuting it at E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) and giving details along the way.
If you don't believe me, go to any gaming website or magazine that has to do with Nintendo and you'll see.

Speedic : You call the M rating immature, yet there's games with that rating that use mature ideas. I'm not mad or anything, but I just want to show you how deep an M rated game can be.

I'm just going to use one of my all time favorite games, Silent Hill 2, as an example. I won't spoil anything for anyone just to prove my point, as that's selfish. The game is about a man who is searching for his currently dead wife, Mary. This man knows what he's doing is crazy, and admits it right at the beginning of the game. The sliver of hope of finding his wife he gained from a letter he got one day causes him to go to a town they went on vacation to before she died.

He runs into manifestations of his inner torment, including creatures that symbolize his feelings of deserving death or some kind of judgement. He goes through the town Silent Hill, and he learns he was actually on a quest for redemption.

The game is filled with millions of things used for symbolism, and simply can't be described easy. I tried my best not to spoil anything if you ever decided to check it out for whatever reason. Not making fun of you for preferring E rated games, just giving you a good example of an M rated game that is far from "un-mature".

I heard somewhere (can't really remember where) that the new system is going to be "less gimmicky" so I'm guessing that it will be a straight forward system. I would say that the motion and everything like that will be gone, so it will be more like the Gamecube than the Wii (I hope so, I really love my Wii but I really want to be able to play Nintendo games without having to use motion controls and point my controller at the screen). Can't wait to find out what the system is.
