Protecting kids on the Internet:

Thoughts? Do you think it's ok to protect kids on the internet like this? I sure hope everyone agree's that's a good thing.

I say give all the kids battle-bot construction facilities and let them fight it out. Only the top 60% of kids get to survive, the rest are euthanized silently, in their sleep. The ones who survive are mature enough to handle the damned internet.

I think it is important to limit the amount of "screen time" that kids get. We are allowing TV and the internet to educate and raise our kids. Instead of spending time reading or going outside and getting exercise most kids come home to video/computer games, hours of TV and the internet. Anyway... a little of topic there...

I really think kids should be monitored fairly closely in regards to what they do on the internet. They should be taught that there are dishonest people on the internet and that these people are out to use them in any way they can (ie, money, sex etc.). As kids get older the restrictions should lessen but the monitoring shouldn't. I want to know what my kids are doing while on the computer.

I do agree with iBOCK that you can't fully protect your children. There is always something that could happen but I don't see that as a reason to not try.

I agree with geeogree on all points. When I have kids the computer is going in the living room and there is a limit on the time they will be allowed on. Of course, if the kids are anything like me they'd probably spend all their time on message boards and looking up random s*** on wikipedia.

yeah, I think the internet is like anything in life. Expose kids to it enough that they understand what it is and what dangers there are and they should develop a healthy respect for it. That works with most things. Guns, drugs, sex, smoking, drinking... hiding these topics from your kids won't help them understand and respect the effect they can have on lives. It usually makes them so taboo that kids are overly excited by them. I'd rather teach my kids about most of those things personally and even be there when they try a lot of it if they choose to (or in relation to sex, at least know about it and be able to instruct/provide methods of contraception). My own experience taught me that parents that try to control kids too much quite often creates a rebellious personality that goes out and gets into way more trouble than the natural curiosity would have in the first place.... that's just me though.

i totally agree gee, the more you try to hide bad things from them (drugs, sex etc) the more they'll feel curious. and the worst thing that can happen is that by protecting your kids, instead of being a good parent, you're not noticing that your holding your child's neck to tight that he/she cant breath and move freely already and and the outcome of that is this:he/she might rebel if his/her feelings explodes. he'll/she'll feel that your making him/her your puppet, controlling his/her every move.

i'm not a parent but i'm a child(13 yrs old) who's a victim of this kind of things that's why i know how it really feels to be like that. luckily, mom cant control me anytime cause whenever she tries(during weekends) dad is there to help me out.... that's why i love dad more than mom but ofcourse i know why mom is acting like that towards me, she just wants to protect me, but its just too much

but i'm not a rebelious kid anyway..... i'm a good girl
and i have dad and my sisters with me to help

I couldn't get the stupid page to load...but, there's no way to 100% control internet usage. If your kid is small(like 9 and below) you should have them use Kidrocket but besides that, you shouldn't try to shield them...well, to a certain extent anyways.
If they're 10+, I'd recommend them using IE8. It has parental features that allows you to block certain sites like porn sites...

Juliet/Geeo: I totally agree with the both of you. Control them to a certain extent, just don't hover over them & control them.

yeah.... I think porn is the major thing to be controlled... beyond that I'm not too worried about what my kids do on the internet. There is a lot of innocent stuff to get into and that's fine. I just don't need my 12 year olds looking at porn. They're too young to be looking at stuff like that.

Yeah, I know. I heard something about how they were making all porn sites use this special feature that identifies how old you are...nope. They sure don't have them. They have simple little defense things. Before you think I was watching porn, I wasn't. I was curious as to what they did to keep kids out. They use simple little things to do it...things that a 7 year old can figure out. It's a shame really.

I have say to some degree really young children need to be shielded from "bad" things on the internet. As children age however they should be allowed more and more freedom (of course if they are mature enough) to do things and what happens, happens.

I agree, partially because it needs to be done that way (protect and give more and more freedom as they get older) and partially because at a certain age kids figure out how to get around no matter what controls you put up.

i think kids need to learn somehow if you limit your kid and don't let your kid use the internet they will be behind all the other kids. So everyone hand your kid a joint and a beer and let them cruse the internet at the speed of light (for porn)

I think it's fine that there's online spies. There is no damage done to society.. The predators are caught, and arrested. There truly is no way to protect every kid on the internet, and there never really will be. JigSaw already said the only true way, which is completely unrealistic. Our world is slowly starting to revolve around the internet. :

I can just put my birthdate at 1980 or something like that and if they are EVEN more stupider and ask you have age you are without the birthdate thing oh I put 99 years old .

PS: btw I never been to pron site before (I don't even know they exist till last year but I still don't access them ) .

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
