For the past few months now, I've been chewing a lot of gum. It helps me concentrate on coding and also takes my mind off of wanting to eat (which results into me eating less and losing a little weight). When I do this, I go through a lot of gum, anywhere between 5 - 10 sticks a day and I buy a lot of packs and usually mix up the flavors. Well I recently bought a big pack of Big Red and been chewing that a lot lately and for some reason I ended up going through like 10 sticks within a few hours. The result? My tongue is really sore and I can't really taste foods very well. I'm not sure if this is an allergic reaction or if this is normal from eating to much big red.

For those who don't know, Big Red is hot flavored gum and is very strong smelling.

Mmmm... This thread makes me miss chewing Big Red. I like that gum a lot, only one I like better is Juicy Fruit.

I don't know anything about the effects of that, but if I had to guess I would say it might be due to the amount of the cinnamon your tongue is exposed to. That gum is a little spicy, which does physically affect your tongue, causing the slight burning sensation. Because of that, it almost seems like it's causing damage to your tongue and taste buds on the microscopic level. Not enough is done with one stick, but chewing as many sticks as you did in a short amount of time without giving the tongue time to recover may very well be the reason why the cinnamon has numbed your taste buds and made your tongue sore.

I have a similar thing with any cinnamon flavored stuff, except I get canker sores all over my mouth instead of just a sore tongue. And I mean all over. Like 50-100 canker sores. I didn't eat for a week .

So yeah, I can understand that gum making your mouth hurt....

I would imagine chewing that much cinnamon gum is equal to downing a bottle of Tabasco sauce... at least the results are the same.

I haven't had Big Red in a ling time, but I do remember the feeling on my tongue after chewing a stick being almost like a tiny tingly/numb with a slight sandpaper texture. I know that had I chewed more I might have ended up with the same problem David has.

Never heard of Big Red before, but judging from effects, I'd have to say that I've chewed something similar; Hot chili flavoured gum.
All I can say is, listen to the croud; chew milder gums. The effect the chili-flavoured gum had on my (At the time) 5-year old tender mouth will last a lifetime.

I think you just had to much gum in a little bit of time your tongue was working to hard.......I know what you mean because i stopped eating big red i noticed that they dont make it the same anymore the texture doesnt even feel like gum and if you noticed they dont even use use the foil wrapper anymore and the taste only last for a short time its nothing like it was when it was popular ...i just think they dont make big red the same anymore. They got stuff like 5 gum now.
