I think so, but not for many, many, many, many years, probably year 2500 at the earliest. So what do you think?

ever? of course I think we can. We've managed to get as far as we have I don't see why we won't be able to get there eventually.

I wonder if it will be some sort of colony ship that requires hundreds of years and many generations to get there..... or if it will be some new form of propulsion that can move a ship extremely quickly with little to no fuel use....

We need a little time to come up with the technology. We all may not live to see it but maybe our grandchildren or great-grandchildren will.

Maybe, because we haven't even gotten to Mars yet. So it's gonna be a long time, and at the intelligence rates dropping such as they are, we might not ever make it due to lack of scientists.

I don't think it is possible. First off, we cant even get to mars, and there is an asteroid belt blocking the path to other planets. Second, we are in a orb like spiral of a galaxy, and im guessing that after we get out of the orb of gasses, it will be impossible to reach further limits. Or even return, at that. Plus, Millions of generations cant do one task that was being done for generations, they wouldn't know where to start after the last person is gone. Therefor, I think it won't be possible.

Hmm... I think it's quite possible... the question is, will we still be alive when our technology has expanded to that point? Because at the rate we're going, we'll all die in a nuclear explosion from Russia-China-Japan-N.Korea and be covered in garbage.

Eventually. But nowhere in the near future.

About 1000-2000 years, before we develop technology get out of the milky way in a short amount of time.

I think that the technology involved in getting to another galaxy would likely destroy the solar system rather than get us that far into space. Only exception would be a space colony on a trip for 10000 years. Otherwise, fantasy transportation systems might just spread our atoms to the target area, or cause a singularity and destroy the universe.

http://www.stonemakerargument.com/2.html And this is why I don't believe in wormholes, in convenient comic form.

I think that it will be possible we could get to other Galaxies but not anywhere in the near future.

Personally I think man will probably die off before we find a way to propel a ship to another galaxy.

septembern : That answer is reality, but it's a lot more than that-

I put "no" but we do always have a chance of making it that far. The thing is, at the rate we're developing space travel technology it'll be another thousand years or so before humanity ever colonizes another planet. And one that's habitable probably isn't less than 15 light years away. I'm sure some of you know that 15 light years, despite the small number that is sounds like, is very, very far away. 15 years at light-speed, which we don't yet have. Take that number and then look at how long the Milky Way is- some 100,000 light years across. We are situated 26,000 light years from the center. For reference, the Voyager 2 space craft is traveling at about 38,000 mph and would take 450,000,000 years to reach the center from where it currently is.

The nearest galaxy, Andromeda, is 2.5 million light years away. Or rather, it is the closest spiral galaxy, and one about the same size as our own. There are others that are close to us, but I'm sure you guys are referring to something like the Andromeda. Here's a chart that has the positions of other galaxies from our position.

So take 2.5 million light-years and imagine how far away that is. Unless we attain speeds that are of in excess of thousands of light years we can never hope to get to a galaxy like Andromeda. The Small and Large Megellanic Clouds, which are both actually irregular galaxies, are much closer being only 200,000 and 160,000 light years from Earth, respectively.

No, I don't think it's possible. We have to face reality and even though we're making good progress it's not enough. Like Mega said, we can't even get to Mars and if Andromeda truly is the closest galaxy to us, then when 2500 comes, we'll still be so far away.

legacyme3 :

I find that very hard to believe, they are just a group of stars away from us, not another University/Dimension .

I think it is possible if humans work together....but it will most likely take about 1000+ years to get there ALIVE, with living humans, and that is if everyone is nice and spends all their time on space tech.

I don't know what to comment about this, but I think that the human race/Earth will most likely end before that, unless, of course, that we manage to go to another planet and set up colonies there... and major ones that are almost as live-able as Earth.

Possible? I think so.
Probability: Low.

It would take decades of research and improvement, and funds way beyond what we have now. And that's if humanity worked together and did nothing else. Frankly, not possible in our lifetime. But maybe someday, provided the space programs don't all shut down.

I think humanity is capable of getting that far, but we're all going to vaporize each other before then, I think. That might be a hundred or two years away, but still.
