I was walking into a class a little bit late, and my professor was doing a devotion before class. However, when I walked in, she was saying things like "God took these things away from me, I hate you God, I abandon you." As it turns out, she was reading from a book about reflections of a person who almost abandoned his faith, but it did sound like she was going to become an atheist, which she is not.

This shows an important lesson. If we walked into the middle of a conversation, we might misunderstand something or someone. In the same way, reading Bible is to understand what the context is. You cannot just interpret a verse any way you like, nor can you change the meaning. Using context, one can understand what the verse is saying.

I have heard a story of a woman talking to her pastor about whether she should leave his husband for another man. Now, we know that this is adultery, and it is a sin. But after a while, the woman told the pastor that she will leave his husband for that other man. The pastor asked why and the woman said: "Because the Bible says so"...oh really? What verse is that? Guess what verse she picked...? Come on, guess. It's the following:

(Colossians 3:10 NKJV)"and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him,"

Sooo, the woman interpreted this verse to justify her cheating...hmmm....what's wrong with this...? Those of you who know the context of this verse, this verse is talking about those who live for Christ should act like "a new man", abandon the old sinful self. If you look at other translations, you would see "man" to be translated as "self." So this is what the verse is talking about. Not picking up a new man as your husband. That is not what the verse is talking about.

Remember, context, context, context.

I think that within the Bible there are certain verses that contain a spiritual truth or application in just the one or two verses (not in the case of said misinterpreted scripture), but it's important to know the context nonetheless in order to have accurate discernment.

"1 Corinthians 11:14 ESV

Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him,"

This is the verse that has no meaning for us except historical meaning. Sexual perverts of the time would have long hair, and this is why that was mentioned. I may be completely wrong, though.

There's tons of verses that are used wrongly. The verse I just quoted is one of them. A lot of the verses in the Bible were taking note of what was wrong in the society of the writer of each book. Paul or whoever wrote 1 Corinthians lived in a time when sexual perverts used hair to identify they were perverts of sex.

I had to bring this verse up again. Besides, it is worth mentioning in this topic.
