I was walking into a class a little bit late, and my professor was doing a devotion before class. However, when I walked in, she was saying things like "God took these things away from me, I hate you God, I abandon you." As it turns out, she was reading from a book about reflections of a person who almost abandoned his faith, but it did sound like she was going to become an atheist, which she is not.
This shows an important lesson. If we walked into the middle of a conversation, we might misunderstand something or someone. In the same way, reading Bible is to understand what the context is. You cannot just interpret a verse any way you like, nor can you change the meaning. Using context, one can understand what the verse is saying.
I have heard a story of a woman talking to her pastor about whether she should leave his husband for another man. Now, we know that this is adultery, and it is a sin. But after a while, the woman told the pastor that she will leave his husband for that other man. The pastor asked why and the woman said: "Because the Bible says so"...oh really? What verse is that? Guess what verse she picked...? Come on, guess. It's the following:
(Colossians 3:10 NKJV)"and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him,"
Sooo, the woman interpreted this verse to justify her cheating...hmmm....what's wrong with this...? Those of you who know the context of this verse, this verse is talking about those who live for Christ should act like "a new man", abandon the old sinful self. If you look at other translations, you would see "man" to be translated as "self." So this is what the verse is talking about. Not picking up a new man as your husband. That is not what the verse is talking about.
Remember, context, context, context.
