I don't save that often, really. Sometimes the game gets so interesting and fun that I forget about saving. Sometimes I think I don't need to save and can beat a boss or something without doing so. I always save before shutting down the game, obviously, but not that much while I'm playing.

It mostly depends on the game. For example if I'm playing pokemon old games, I save only whenever I get a new pokemon or beat a gym leader(of course I save also before I turn the game off,lol).
But at new action games, assassin's creed, which can be saved only when you've reached a "checkpoint", I just play till the nearest checkpoint, I can't do anything more

I rarely save my game, infact I've played through my Pokemon Crystal until beating the Pokemon league without saving (since it saves for you there anyway). It is often my downfall though, because something always happens if I don't save my game.
