I prefer racing. While I enjoy balloon battle, like others have said it gets really repetitive really quickly. Mario Kart DS does have some awesome battle stages (the giant DS system and the haunted house one are my favorites) but I have more fun actually racing, as there are more race tracks than battle tracks.

I really only played those games in Racing mode to get all the golds in each cup, then I was all out battle mode because it was nearly never the same playing against the people I did then.  We always had random on for everything and the sheer mix up made things really fun.
