3d is gimmick, if the plot line is poor, the acting shoddy and the script a joke then any amount of polishing with a three d camera is still akin to polishing the brown stuff.

So here it is a thread that will really put you to the test.

Best B&Ws of all time.

To get the Ball Rolling

Its a Beautiful Life
Psycho
Casablanca

Maybe you agree, maybe not, which B&Ws do you rate or hate.

Perhaps you like 3d then tell me.

Black and White was not a trend there was no color on tv's back then. As for 3D that is a trend and I also believe people add it into a product just to sell it. Who cares about 3D? If the movie sucks 3D wont save it. But that is what people want these days and in video games people just want good graphics so it seems to have moved on to other industries.

Have not seen many black and white movies but I've seen 3 stooges, birds, twilight zone, outer limits, and a few others I forgot which were mostly tv shows.

This whole 3D thing reminds me of the remake trend they are out of ideas by now It also is similar to high definition tv's or whatever they are doing what they can to sell a product in different variations

Well, I have never watched a 3D TV show, and I dislike the 3D movies because they hurt the eyes.

I have never seen a B&W movie or TV show, nor do I want to. They're all pixely and hard to see.

I like my Color HD TV any day, any time.

I listen to the radio a lot, for rock, showtunes, and pop. I also get my main source of news from there. The newscasters are all hilarious.

*cough* Avatar *cough*

Casablanca and Citizen Kane are what come to mind to me. Those were black and white, right? They're in color in my memory. And High Noon; I liked that film.

The whole 3-D thing was cool when I was seven, but now it just seems stupid to me. Plus, it just reminds you that you're actually there watching it. When you're really into a movie or a book, it all becomes intellectual and you forget that you're physically there watching/reading it. When you have a big arm reaching into the audience, it reminds you: oh, right, I'm sitting in an audience watching this. It keeps me from being absorbed into the story.

I don't know if all that really makes sense, but that's my two-cents.

I think that there is a certain appeal for B&W films. It comes off as genuine and warm to me. I feel like it's back in the days when the movies were a big part of life. Back then, this must have been seen as magical or at least unbelievable. Persepolis is a movie like that for me. Although it may not be old (and actually has a few parts in color), it has that same movie spirit. It's not like one of those movies with one running joke after another and mindless action and sex sequences, it's a real film (despite being an animation). I love animated films, especially when done right. Nowadays it's almost always CGI and I can't stand that. It looks so fake and I can't get attached to the characters or story or anything. WALL-E is another fine movie. Despite being in color and computer generated, it still has that charm. There are not many words, which I really love since often words are used too much. Words get in the way. But yeah, B&W, I'd like to see some more.

JigSaw : black and white is not a trend, maybe but look at movies like schindler's list. They kinda did it as a trend, and I think a couple other movies I can't think of. Now as for old school movies in B&W sorry guys I'm old school with games but I like new movies. Even the 60's color is too much for me to handle. Now for 3D I recently watched a commercial for a 3D horror flick, to me this seems awsome. I've only seen 2 movies in 3D the first was Alice in Wonderland and I spent the first hour dodging stuff thrown at the screen. I think this would make for some intense horror seens and jump out of your skin moments. And ever since the new 3d, polarized instead of different colors, everything can still be enjoyed in all its high definition glory.

Visuals are like drugs; they satisfy for a while, but age very rapidly unless it is exceptionally unique, then makes it difficult to watch anything with "lesser quality" visuals without criticizing it. The Birds, for example, I'm sure was very scary back when it was made, but now you can see the strings holding the birds up, so it loses it's most important factor. Better technology gives greater potential, but distracts from the most important elements. Independence Day and Twister were praised for their visuals and were very popular when they came out, but today are ridiculed because once the awe wore off, all of their other flaws became glaringly obvious. 10 years from now, Avatar will be a movie that everyone will deny they liked or even saw because it is so bad. If we compare these to some of the best movies of all time like Citizen Kane, The Godfather, the original Star Wars trilogy, and Schindler's List the difference is obvious. The best movies and indeed pretty much any movie with lasting appeal had a focus on such things as a good story or good acting(though many great movies did have great visuals as well). Video games are in a similar situation, except that the primary factor of a timeless video game is the gameplay. Games like the original Mario are timeless, and will continue to entertain for decades to come, but the cinematic or graphically focused games will fade into history. Since the focus on visuals perpetuates itself, it contributes to the lack of new ideas. Why come up with a new story when you can just remake an old one with better visuals, quite possibly not even bothering to rename it.

Totts : Well, I don’t know if it’s a fair easement to call 3D TV a waste yet or not… I haven’t personally seen a supposed 3D movie in more than 20 yrs and back then the glasses were the old cardboard type. I haven’t had a chance to check out any of the new movies with what ever new advancements that their suppose to have. I am curious to see what sports look like in 3D but I am very reluctant to invest in a 3D TV for the obvious reason that it is “The New thing” and that it costs more than what I television should cost especially in this economy.

I did hear today that their getting ready to re-release the entire Star Wars series in 3D sometime in 2012. I never really got into Star Wars in the 80s but I think that might be worth checking out as a way to test whether or not 3D is really worth the investment.

I am so impressed by the quality of replies here, I love all good movies, if its good its good, no matter what format. 3d as it stands is too new for a good assessment, but so far to me it has not yet failed to produce a good movie, and the produce the same films in 2d anyway, so to me whats the point.

Let me explain that we have been there and done that a million times before, I remeber Jaws 3d with carboard glasses, that was a reat film, 3d or not, so why did they bother if it was not a cheap marketing trick.

Yes those dudes have created some amazing stuff with 3d, but does that make it a great film, no!

But you could watch any Chaplin, any Rat Pack, any Marx brothers, any of the great old action movies and they are fab.

I think its prejudice, like the new Kindle is meant to be fantatic, well why not read a book, does it need to be polished and who selects what goes on it anyway (me feels a new thread is coming on here).

All my love

I remember watching the original (1951) movie The Day the Earth Stood Still. It's a very unique movie, and I could easily see why it was a cult classic. A great movie.

The only black and white movie I've seen was I think it's called Eraserhead. The movie was 3 hours long and very boring. I think another black and white is dancing in the rain. Not my kind of movie but my weird friend begged me to watch it with him..so i did.

SIN CITY!!!!

Yeah, I know, this was not what you meant, but I just couldn't resist . Sorry ¬_¬

Let's see...Phantom of the Opera (1925, Rupert Julian), Dr Jeckyll and Mr Hyde (1920, John Robertson), Nosferatu (1922, F Murnau), The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
