I'm going with Squall, since I liked FF8 better than the rest. Everyone makes a fuss about how it's story was no good, but personally I think it's better than FF7's in it's own way. I didn't really care for FF9 or Zidane that much, I don't think he was a very strong character, I never felt any kind of attachment to him.

I've got to go with Cloud, the backstory and all the side quests really defined him to me as the most detailed character of any of the games. It also helped that he had a good supporting cast of characters around him. Plus omnislash is still by far the coolest attack of any game.
