I earned my Black Belt in American Kenpo about 2 1/2 years ago. I have my White Belt in Shotokan, but I didn't really like their philosophy about fighting (protect my ribs, ignore head) so I'm not doing that anymore. My Mom kept telling me to go get karate lessons when I was younger. I don't remember why, but I was very against the idea. I think she forgot about it (or saw how much they charged) so I never took a lesson. Looking back, it probably would have been nice to learn.

NotJon : It was one thing from my youth that I can say was legitimately enjoyable. I use to have most of my classes done on a one on one basis and even had some one on one time with the head sensai.

Had it not been for what I was going through at the time I likely would have continued. Not because of any joy of fighting or anything like that but it is nice knowing you’re capable of defending yourself when you’re disabled in the off chance that someone will try to make things difficult for you.

I ran into that a bit when I was in high school but it wasn’t an every day thing though sometimes it felt like it was.

And for anyone who may be wondering, as I said before I cover Boxing for a living and keep a close eye on all combat sports and would gladly box if I could.
