The thing is when it comes to Pokemon there is many different things that go through my head. First of all I want to make sure that they have at least remotely good moves. I will not use a Pokemon that can not learn any good moves no matter how strong they are. But that is not the main thing I look for. I usually look to see how popular they are. I will not use a Pokemon that has like a million people who use it as their main Pokemon because I do not want to be the same. The other thing is the more un known a Pokemon is the better chance you have at winning a battle. They will see that Pokemon and they will not know what to do about it because they do not have any experience training it. I also usually make sure that they are NOT legendary.

I like to have a well-balanced team. When I look for a Pokemon, I try to find a Pokemon that can effectively fit into my team strategy. For example, if I were creating a team according to weather effects, I'd probably pack Kyogre, Castform, and perhaps Groudon.

I look for the powers and the amount of damage the attacks give. I personally like to use the psychic, plant, and fire pokemon the most. They all seem to do the most damage. In pokemon stadium, Jinx alone dominated all the gyms and its leaders.

I find high stats (Defense for me) to be very important so it can survive long enough for fatal blows. However, stats are worthless if the Pokémon has bad typing.

I like rare and cool looking pokemon although I care little for legendaries since they lack evolutions and are already powerful to begin with as well as the lack of gender with a few exceptions (Latios, Latias) being male and female.
