Juliet : I did only once too!
It was 8 years ago. But the priest made me feel so bad about myself that I've never confessed again. Now, I don't believe that just a single human being can erase all your "sins".

"But the priest made me feel so bad about myself that I've never confessed again."

And that is probably a big reason why people don't do it often.

I don't believe confession to a priest is required to obtain forgiveness of sins... however there are instances in the Bible where it talks about removing people out of fellowship with the church who refuse to confess and forsake their sins. It would take me a while to find the verses (I think) but I know it's in there.

[insert unspecified amount of time]

nope, can't find it right now.... but I know it's there somewhere.

geeogree : And most priest was making me feel bad, also for another reason.
Whenever we go to church(not very often now), they're telling us that if we don't confess our sins, we'll "burn in hell".
When I was younger and more naive, I used to worry, because I haven't confessed more than once...
But now, I don't care much about their void threatens

As long as you ask Jesus to forgive you of your sins, preferably at night each time you pray, that's all you need (now if you're having problems overcoming a sin, than you probably need some Christian guidance but that's a different topic).

Jesus died on the Cross for a reason, a priest didn't

As for me, I never have since I'm not Catholic.

noelia : I said in the other confession thread that while it's not important to confess to a priest or other clergy in order to gain forgiveness from Jesus.... I think there are things that can be advantageous about confessing some sins to a priest/clergy. They have life experience and perspective that most of us don't have. They are (supposed to be) living their life as closely to what the what the Bible says as they can and probably have a lot of insight that could be useful to overcome sin.

I'm not saying God can't help you either.... but I personally think that if there is a tool available to help you on Earth that God expects you to use that first before asking him for extra help.

The church I go to doesn't have priests, it has pastors and a few other leaders. I do not confess to them unless it is just a friendly conversation. I don't speak to them because it is my duty. As I said in another thread, It isn't a mandatory thing as a priest has no power to forgive sin. I do converse with leaders a couple times during the week.

I've confessed at least twice in my life, I don't do it that much, because it's not a tradition in my family.

I am a catholic so I confess often, but I have a good relationship with all of my priests so it's pretty easy to let it all out. I also confess because I believe that God acts through priests to give confessions since the priestly tradition traces all the way back to Jesus when Peter was made pope of the church. This turning of earthly power from Jesus to Peter was symbolic in that Jesus entrusted us to make our own decisions in worshiping God in this newly formed church. around this time, one of the popes after Peter decided to put confession into effect since it was a belief that God worked through all priests. I just go to confession because thats what I choose to believe.

Don't flame me because I'm not trying to offend anybody.

I don't believe in confession. I only confess to God himself. I can't bring myself to believe that a man can make my sins forgiven because in my mind, only God himself can forgive me for my sins. If I'm not asking God directly for forgiveness, I don't feel like he's heard me.

I don't know. That's just me. I respect your beliefs seeron but I can't agree with them.

Even if I did do this, I would just keep it all to myself. Why can I trust a guy I don't know with my downfalls? At least Yahweh(not Jewish. Just feel like calling Him by that name makes more sense to me) wouldn't be as fast to judge or call the police on you if you did something illegal. Not that I have, but still.

If you feel better by telling a priest, go on ahead. Please, just don't expect me to say more than, "Oh. I lied to my mom about homework." I'm not trusting anyone who is able to send me to a mental hospital if I told them anything that could get me to one.

I don't go out and confess to a priest that often, just whenever my school makes us confess.
Yeah, the school thinks that we're mostly bad people that just don't understand.

I am Eastern Orthodox...I go to confession every Saturday night before Divine Liturgy on Sunday. Of course, due to my current situation vis a vis car/parish, that lately is once, maybe twice a month. At my old parish, however, I confessed every week. I find it it remarkably healing and liberating, knowing the priest is there for guidance and as a witness, knowing that this is for my spiritual growth and well-being . And yes, sometimes it IS difficult...but for me at least, definitely worth it.

I never confessed, I don't go to church since it's not really my thing, but i'm technically a Catholic. I don't want to offend anyone
but i think the priest would throw me out for the things I've done
(I'm not a bad person, just things that the catholic church would frown upon)

I have gone twice. Once was mandatory, the other was to encourage my sister to go. I don't feel the need to go anymore. Usually, the things that I had done that I felt bad about, I apologize to the people that I had hurt. If there's something about myself that I feel torn up about, I try and move past it and not shy away from it. I pretty much be honest with myself and others and try and improve on the areas of me that are seen by myself and others as undesirable I guess you could say and by making myself a better individual, I fail to see any further need to tell a priest my business.
