I grew up watching Rated R movies and playing Mature rated games so I really wouldn't care if someone did play these kind of games even if they're as young as nine years old. I look at it as if you are making no effort to shelter your kid from the sin infested world that we live in but restrict his gameplay it's completely unfair to the kid. He might even get a advantage in life by being exposed to these sort of things. I'll give you a example of why I would get angry or heated about this sort of thing. My Nephew is going to a private christian school, which I congratulate my Sister for. He is pretty much sheltered from the world in a good way. They don't inhibit his fun or life by this. He plays soccer, has play dates and even can go on the internet with some restriction on the search engines. But hypothetically if  they were to fire up a game system and pop in a Mature game or put on a rated R movie then all the effort of sheltering him would go down the drain.
All in all if the parents don't really shelter their kid but say they can't play certain games I disagree with that because there is really no point once the damage is done. You know what  you know and you can never erase that. This is my opinion and may be wrong in some parents eyes but I know if I ever have a kid I will follow the age guidelines for movies and games. Try and put him/her through private school and things of that sort. I want my kid to grow up with integrity and a clean mind, basically not turn out the way I did. I know what not to teach my kids but I'll struggle with the other half of parenting.

It really depends on the kid if they can play such games. There are plenty of 9 year old genius that do highschool likes it elementary school work. I'm sure there mature enough to handle those games. The way the kid was raised has alot to due with it as well. If the parents didn't involve themselves in the kids life and teach the kid right from wrong those games would have a huge affect on the development of that child. Most children shouldn't have access to those kind of games but those games are popular so it's what they see on T.V. and the Internet and they will wine until their parents get the game for them.

It completely depends on the child, and how the parents raised them. I was playing games like these at a young age, and I was watching R rated movies at a young age. I'm a high functioning, relatively intelligent human being with no more psychotic urges than anyone else.

Yeah, I have talked to this 5 year old kid who says he has all those games you have and many more bad games. The worst part is that he already knows bad words! I talked to his parents and they said: "He got that from another kid and by the time we knew, he was already talking bad so we said "well, its too late now. No point in wasting our time." When I heard that I was in shock. A few seconds later I said "Sorry but you are really bad parents. If that was my kid, I would use all the time I have, even if I have work, to fix him up!" Ever since that day, I didn't see either of the kid or his parents.

I played GTA Vice City when i was about 4 i never knew what anything meant and really didn't care i didn't know at the time i was killing drug dealers and i didn't care at all my 4 year old brain could never process that or even hookers were in that game i just played the game i dont see anything bad about that as long as their parents properly educated them about how you can never do that in real life and how its just a game and not real. My parents properly educated me and i've never had any violent tendencies at all i've been okay and have never thought about killing as a good thing.

Though I would frown upon a child that age playing these games, I do think it depends on the kid. My parents let me play games like that (not as bad as those games, but generally above age) and I stayed normal, those games didn't mess up my mind, I didn't curse no matter how often the characters I played as did, the games didn't make me more violent, and I didn't brag about my ability to play them. I mean, I have had a five year old flip me off, and I'm sure his parents let him play those games before he was ready, that being the best explanation. I may not be a parent, but I think ive got a good idea about the gaming thing, you have to consider you're child's maturity before you let them play the games.

No. No,no,no,NO! THERE HAS GOT TO BE A LINE. Children are very impressionable; if you let them play games where they kill indescriminately,
constantly shout obscene language, do drugs, and all that crap then they'll think it's okay. They will become morally bankrupt and believe it's acceptable to disrespect and hurt people. Yeah, in today's world, they'll probably see all that anyway, probably before they've even left middle school, but if the parent sets an example and does not allow it in their house, the child will thinks it's wrong, too. but of course, it all varies on the child and parent and the way the interact besides. Yup, just keeping your kids from bad games won't make them good people. you gotta man up and be a good parent for them.

Well *users reading this post hover over my user name to see my age* I'm a kid myself, and I think it depends on the maturity of the child. If the child played E-rated games like Mario before, and he was pretending to stomp Goombas and ? Blocks, and then he pleads for GTA or something like that, that's a bad sign. If he played those "safe for kids" games before and just enjoyed the game and didn't try to clone the actions, in that case GTA and COD and all that stuff it might be OK. It really depends on the parent. Here are some very unfortunate examples of kids copying the actions of characters in violent games: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_controversies#Publicized_incidents

I have also been defined as "mature for my age" so even though I have no interest in those games, my parents would probably get me them if I asked (not that I'd want to play those dumb games anyway...)

2 things.
1= Kids say the oddest things.
2= Let the parents learn how to raise their kids.

I have decided to not have children for many reasons.
The number one reason? I don't want anyone telling me how to raise mine.
I think that each family has its own journey to take in life. If there were a manual that informed all how this is done to the letter, we would be religiously reading that book as some folks read the Bible. I will admit that I have encountered many strange "parents", but I am not qualified to decide what they do or don't do with their kids. When I was a kid things were different. I was waiting for my chance to enter the adult world. Now? The world is different. It is a world where everyone caters to the kids and they don't have to grow up or into a world any more. It's been handled.
It's the way I see it folks.
Sue me.

Good Luck To All.
I'm done. Stick a Fork in Me.
Peace.

That's yet another reason kids should be matured to play those games.  If they are mature, they will not have nightmares nor will they be affected by the game (hopefully). And mature does NOT mean of a specific age, a child can be matured enough for those games at any age (almost). They just need a well-trained brain.

It does depend on the child, granted that these M rated games aren't you sex kind of games. My parents told me at a young age video games are fantasy and I understood that and enjoyed the games and my parents would let us play M rated games at young age as long as it didn't have nudity. That I can understand if you can tell the real world from fake what difference. Modern Warfare, Call of Duty, Skyrim that is fine but I if I were a parent I would hold off on Grand Theft Auto.

Well, I absolutely agree with patrichard, but anyway:
One time when I was WAY younger my brother (He was over 25 at the time) came over and brought Call of Suckiness  Duty and his XBox or something, and he would not let me play it (I didn't even ask to play it anyway......)  but my parents weren't there, so i don't know if they would actually let me play those games. Again, I don't think games with sex and nudity would be acceptable, but they might agree and allow me to play COD or Halo or whatever. I don't know because I've never asked for those games, and the only game over E for Everyone (I've also gotten some 10+ games and played them, but that's besides the point) Is Zelda Twilight Princess, which is T-rated because of a little blood at the end. They let me play that game. Maybe I should ask them if they would allow me to play COD and that stuff

It highly depends. If it were something like Tetris for the game boy(I played it when I was really young), it would be fine. Much more complicated games? Not so much.

kingvictory : I don't mean to be annoying, but I think you mean AO (Adults Only). A is not a rating. Also you should not buy M for Mature games for a unmatured child. After all, isn't the rating called M for Mature?
