When I was a kid, I used to believe that everything about Atlantis, in Ôßìåïò(Timeos) and Êñéôßáò(Kritias), (both of them are books, by Plato(I think)), were real.
Now, I know that most ancient books don't contain only true facts, but we should always take into consideration the context of the era and the writer's purpose.

So, what's your opinion about lost Atlantis?
Is it true, or is just a myth?

I am not sure, heck I don't even really know what Atlantis is Never really learned about it or anything. Is it like a lost city or something? There is a potential it could be fake like those greek god myths but if we are talking about a location or some sort of lost city there is probably ways to prove they do indeed exist. However, there is only one major problem and that is I just read that its an island that fell into the ocean during an earthquake...

One of two things could happen. 1 the city or island or whatever it was is completely destroyed and gone or 2 its so deep in the ocean no man can get to it. After all we know more about space then our own ocean so there is a big potential of it existing. But then again the same could be said in the opposite manor.

JigSaw : Well, according to the original myth, "Atlantis" was a bunch of islands, which were given by Poseidon to his son, Atlas.
After that lots of people went there and it is said that they had great and superior technology than the other civilizations. So, the atlanteans take their evolved army and starts conquering the world, but while they were fighting with Atheneas, a huge earthquake destroyed their whole civilization by sunking their islands.
This story was narrated to Solonas (an Athenean legislator), by an Egyptian priest(Solonas visited actually the Egypt). And after that Solonas narrated this story to the other Atheneans, when he came back in Greece.
And Plato, took that "story" and discuss about it, on these books, that I've already mentioned.
According to Plato, that bunch of islands were beyond the Hercules columns(this means that they were west of Spain coasts)

Well, I don't remember more about this right now, I hope these are enough to give you a little taste of that "story"

I think it's a partially true story.... there has to be some truth to it somewhere.... even if it is only the name of the civilization or an island that was sunk by an earthquake or something. No one has ever found it so I doubt we'll ever really know for sure....

noelia : Thanks for the info The only fishy thing about this all is how this civilization had advanced technology and yet were knocked out of existence in the blink of an eye. Thats what kinda makes me think its a myth. However, theres no doubt that past civilizations were very smart they knew a LOT for such primitive times so that makes it more believable.

It took people 80 + years to discover the titanic so the only thing we have to do to prove it exists is get better at underwater exploring and try to find it.

I suck at geography but maybe Atlantis is located here in the deepest part of the ocean?



That is just a guess, but the picture does look like a quake torn right through there so it might be a possibility lol.

geeogree : Yes, I agree. I think that there is some kind of truth in it. But we can not know for sure, since we don't have solid evidences.
But people used to consider the Trojan war and city as a myth too, untill the archeologist find that city!
I wish we could find something in the future about Atlantis, it's one of the greatest myths, for me¬_¬

Deeply inside of me, I have a feeling that one day, we will find out more about this "story" and the weird atlantean civilization¬_¬ (At least, I hope so,lol)

I remember seeing something that suggests there was an island nation with relatively advanced technology. Then, through a series of natural disasters happening close together, the island was destroyed. As far as how advanced they were, I am not sure, but I doubt they had anything like electricity.

I remember hearing about Atlantis a lot as a kid(or was it me looking it up a lot? I don't remember) It's very fascinating though. I heard about the island of Crete being related to Atlantis or something and all that about Plato's books, but I haven't heard anything about Atlantis since. Has there been any new findings lately?

I think that it's a myth, but it could be real if someone gives me evidence I might start believing.

Ive been interested in Atlantis since elementary school. I do think that maybe there was some kind of advanced civilization. But maybe the Egyptian priest somewhat exaggerated in his stories, I mean you could've blown their minds by showing them a cigarette lighter back then. To me its something that you would want to be true just because how cool the stories are.

No more so then any other creation mythos though, the greek gods are about as likely as any other set of gods or god really.

On the subject of whether or not they were advanced, I think you have to consider what "advanced" means.
In the context of the days of Atlantis the technology might very well have been advanced compared to the rest of the world.
Probally simple things we take for granted would have been the advanced technology, like boiling water to make it sterile and cleanliness for example.

Was Atlantis a real place? Probally. Was it advanced? Maybe.
Where is it? Who knows, probally under our noses, someplace that we call by another name.
How was it destroyed/was it destroyed? Once we find where it was then we'll at least have an idea of that.
Perhaps it was never sunk to the bottom of the ocean but instead was wiped out by a plague, perhaps the Atlantians did take over the world but they spread their forces too thin and were wiped out by the nomadic tribes.
Lastly, was it made by gods? I dont know, I'll let you know when I meet one

OK, you guys know it's coming, so I'll just get it out of the way.

There is some biblical basis for the existence of places like Atlantis: a rich, prosperous, MAYBE futuristic civilization chooses to indulge in greed and worldly excess, so an otherworldly power decides to wipe out the evil with a flood that destroys everything. Noah's flood was world changing enough, it's not impossible that islands would literally sink forever. I mean, if we're talking about a global flood rather than a local disaster, the continents themselves would have been totally reshaped (in fact, the Bible hints that Pangea breaking up would have happened some time after Noah's flood)

Right, now that we've gotten that over with, from a geographical point of view, there are a lot of sites where it's been theorized Atlantis could be, but I've never heard of anything actually being found in any of those sites. Like JigSaw said, it could be as simple as diving down and taking a look, but that's what they said about Nessie :p

I know this island may look familiar to you, but it seems to sink into the ocean whenever I'm trying to find it on a world map, so CLEARLY THIS MUST BE ATLANTIS!!!

There is a small chance that Atlantis exists. I think that there has to be some facts/ truth in the legend but not a whole lot.

Perhaps, atlantis is also a story about the huge cataclysm that happend on the earth, long time ago!
