Doctor Robotnik is by far the superior name, Eggman is just a lame name.
But it also depends on which version of the character we are talking about. Like if we talk about him in Japanese, sure fine call him Eggman, cause that was always his name there. But in English his name should be Robotnik. From Wikipedia- The original English instruction manual for his 1991 debut game Sonic the Hedgehog described the character's full name as "Doctor Ivo Robotnik" while the Japanese version's instruction manual for the same game called him "Doctor Eggman" Alot of games are like that, that the English name is different to the Japanese, so I dont see way the need to change it. That's like saying they should go and change Professor Oak's name to Dr. Ôkido, because that's his "real" name after all.

I agree with DH, the names are a huge difference.
Dr. Robotnik sounds evil. Eggman sounds like something John Lennon would have said. Which isn't scary or evil. Anyways, Eggman has stupid plots that always get foiled, and they revolve around eggs or malfunctioning robots. Dr. Robotnik has better plots, but they still get foiled. They are all working robots. Eggman has blue eyes, like a good guy, and he is silly. Dr. Robotnik has beady red eyes, like a bad guy, and he is serious.

I like Dr. Robotnik than Dr. Eggman because like everybody else says, it sounds more sinister. Also it does make him sound more evil because Dr. Eggman just makes him sounds more weaker and not capable of doing evil stuff. 
SO, I say that Dr. Robotnik sounds more better and far more superior than Dr. Eggman.

I think part of the idea for the name "dr eggman" came from sonic 2,3, and knuckles from having the thing that was a joke of the death star " the death egg". That and his fat shape.

Dr. Eggman would only work if it was a really lame bad guy that never did anything. But as far as I know Robotnik isn't one of those.
