"If you earnestly believe what you believe, it's true."

This is the postmodern idea, that whatever you believe is true is true, and that truth is relative to the person who believes it. This leads to the action of not making an objective statement of what is true and what is not true. Some call it religious tolerance, I call it flawed logic. I can be tolerant and still say that someone is wrong. And I'm totally fine with people tell me that they disagree with my beliefs, but don't say I'm right because I believe it. I would rather have them tell me that I'm wrong than telling me that "It's whatever you believe. If you think it's right, then it's right.

Just because you believe in something with sincerity does not mean it is true. Also with clear differences between these religions, either one of them is right or all of them are wrong. All of them cannot be right. These "realities" are intersected, so unless one of them or none of them are right, all these "realities" cannot happen together.

NOTE: I actually tried interviewing people on the streets, and I pointed to something physical, like a car, and I said that I believe that it is a watermelon, and asked them if I was wrong. No joke, postmodernists respond back saying "if you believe that it is a watermelon then it's a watermelon." YIKES. So this is not just a religion thing, it's expanding to physical realities.

That's... scary. I don't see how someone can actually think that way. I also like when people say "There are no absolute truths." I really have a hard time not laughing when I hear that kind of thing, because you can't actually say that, or else it would be claiming that that is an absolute truth. Believing such weird stuff defies all logic. As a logical human being, I could not tolerate myself if I actually thought that .

bignatealpha : another argument that you can use against that is something like:

Slavery is wrong. If you can come up with an example of when slavery would be permissible then feel free to find one.... but I doubt you can come up with an example. If you can't then "Slavery is wrong" is an absolute truth.

You know, reading the first post in here, my mind went straight to the old Disney movies. You remember Cinderella, Snow White, The Princess And The Frog, all those classics? You should. They repackage those movies more often than they make new ones.

Anyway, do you remember the moral for Cinderella? Let's review the plot: Cinderella dreams of one day being a princess, and one day a fairy comes and turns her into a princess.

...OK, maybe that was a bad example. What about The Princess And The Frog? This is a story about a girl who works hard to achieve her dreams, and makes tremendous sacrifices which are... nullified at the end of the movie, where all her dreams magically come true.

See, these Disney movies all had the same moral: If you wish hard enough, your dreams will come true. I have never seen a Disney film promote working toward your dreams, only believing that one day they will come true.

I say this because this is exactly the same logic you just described: If you believe honestly and truly enough, it is true. This is the same logic as in Disney. Am I saying that postmodernists got these ideas from their childhood cartoons? Well, it's one suspect. I know I watched some, if not many, Christian-themed movies as a child.

...well, OK, that's a bad example, because most Christian childrens' films are even more half-baked than Disney.

So let's review: the man who made movies about talking mice and kindly dwarves is just as believable as the modern human being.

I need to go find a postmodernist in my area; I need to ask them why my pet T. Rex hasn't arrived yet...

A postmodernist may say that there is no absolute truth. But if that statement is true, then it is false.

Ultimately, I believe the truth is whatever you truly think it is. However, this doesn't change the fact that members of a society need some sort of conformity, or there is nothing to hold people together and society can't exist.

If you believe a couch is a space alien, then it is a space alien to you alone. So it would be in a religious/spiritual sense.

It goes the same in the religious/spiritual sense. If I said that Oprah is the god of the universe, and all I have to do is to run around in a circle, shouting "Oprah Oprah Oprah," jump on a couch like tom cruise, and join her book club, I will be able to go to Oprah's heaven, which I can be in her audience for all of eternity.

I just made that up. But if I believe it, will it happen? No. No matter how hard I try to believe it, it won't MAKE it real. It's just not true, so it won't happen.

I've heard of this before. Like I said before. These people don't think anything is absolute truth. This is just some more political correctness.

You misunderstand my statement. While everything exists to you as you perceive it to be, there must still be some standards for people to conform to. If 99% of the people believe it's a couch and not a space alien, then the 1% must naturally conform to accepting it as a couch or be considered an outcast. This is not necessarily a bad thing, because people must be able to communicate with each other.

Hoochman : I think it's more than just political correctness. People genuinely believe that their beliefs control reality. It is a rejection of meta-narrative.

Lagslayer : That is not true either. Majority does not define reality. Just because a lot of people believe it is a couch does not make it a couch. It's because it IS a couch that makes it a couch.

In the same way, many people during Galileo's time reject Copernicus' view that the Earth revolves around the sun, but in reality, the view was true. Just because the majority believe it to be true does not mean that it is true.

If there is no absolute truth, than is evil really evil, is good really the right way to go than?
