So I went shopping a few days ago. The line was all behind me and I was putting my groceries up on the belt. This lady, a little older, asked if I wouldnt mind some assistance. I was like "Sure, whatever!" Im kinda like that...a whatever guy. So anyhow she helped put my stuff up there and all was good. On the way out she...enough of this chick...anyhow. So I tell some friends about what happened and theyre all like "OMG, WHY did you let her TOUCH your food?!?!?" I was really surprised. Everything we buy is touched all day long by people milling over it before you get there. I called my mom and explained to her the same thing...she also freaked out lol. Heres the question....would you freak out if someone helped you put your groceries up on the belt?

I really don't see what the problem would be. Most things are wrapped and sealed, and most things that aren't, like fruits and veggies, are washed before you eat them anyway. You don't really need to worry about germs, and that's really the only possible reason I can think of for being leery of people touching the food.

Also, you're right that most everything you buy has been touched by tons of other people before you buy it anyway. It's not like having one more person touch it will turn it to dust or anything. I think they were seriously overreacting.

Does it really make a difference when the cashier touches everyones food?

Also, no one has clean hands yours are just as dirty as anyone elses. Whether your touching the shopping cart, car door, reaching in pocket to get money, no escaping germs this just sounds like a mild case of cooties to me.

Man... I thought this was going to be a thread about food touching other food. THAT I freak out about. I hate when the different tastes mix.

But to answer your question. No. Thats a really dumb reason to freak out.

It seems that she was trying to be genuinely nice and help you out there. Hopefully, anything that you have from the store that isn't sealed ends up getting washed anyways. Unless the lady was a secret spy who tried to poison you, I don't think it really matters that she touched your food.
And yes, I was also unsure about what this thread would be about, but in a different way (the title when I visited was "Do you freak out when they touch!" ... I really shouldn't have interpreted it that way. ...)

It's out of the norm for people to do that. However, people react differently. You're a "whatever" guy, Carpool. Like me. You probably didn't think twice about her offer. Other people who are sensitive to norms would've refused. One reason being because of the norm, another probably because they don't know if the person has a hidden agenda such as stealing your food or doing something to it.

For old people, they tend to do things out of the norm sometimes (sometimes making them seem weird. Because they do that often, it's considered normal for them by the rest of us. A norm of breaking norms. If it was an old person helping you, it would seem normal. In your case, said person was only "a little older". Yeah, it might seem weird, but then that where personalities come in. She's probably the type to help out with simple stuff. A generous person. That's can be normal too.

So to answer the question, I don't think I would have been freaked out. Not if all someone was doing was simply helping.

I agree with everyone else that there is already germs on the food, I don't think that it is a big deal.

Well I didnt freak out about it and Ive read all the responses. Fun to read mostly. I really thought there were going to be germaphobes out there responding as well lol. Guess not! Maybe thats the way this world is programming people to react! Everyone is so paranoid nowadays that perhaps generosity is viewed as a strange act in itself....and it could have been assistance with anything. Wow...anyhow..fun stuff Im liking reading these! I don't freak out when I get help putting the stuff in the bag. In fact I think it is very kind and saves time.

I dont think there is anything to worry about whats on your food ,most fruits and vegetables come from farmers. Meat need to be cut by hand. Milk and cheese come from cows. People help my mom put the stuff in the trunk. Dont see why you have to worry about stuff like that.

It really isn't that big of a deal there, she was probably just in a hurry and needed to get home. And the food is packaged anyway so it not that unsanitary, as for fruit you wash them off anyway.

The food is in Bags and containers and stuff, It's not like she could have poisoned it! I think your friends and mom are just a tad weird
