So, I woke up earlier this week with a swollen eye. The eyelid was slightly swollen and kind of redder or pinker than normal. I figured it was nothing serious and went about my day.

My wife noticed it and said I should go see an eye doctor about it and I brushed it off. I woke up Wednesday morning with a very noticeable bump under my upper eyelid. I figured now it looks serious enough to see a doctor about. I made an appointment and went in today to get it checked (in a snowstorm ) and found out that it's a serious problem. It's most like just a blocked gland under my eye. I should put a hot compress (washcloth) on my eye as often as I possibly can in order to reduce the swelling and to get the gland to drain. Sounded pretty normal and safe. No eye drops or anything.

The doctor did say that if it were to pop over the next day or 2 that I need to immediately wash my eye out and make sure I get as much of the puss/liquid etc out as possible because if it gets behind my eye it can cause an infection which could move into my brain and kill me.

Not too likely... but still a fun experience. It's not often an eye doctor tells you that you could die.

Now, feel free to comment on my story or tell of any other eye doctor experiences. I've grown up wearing glasses and my vision is somewhat unique so I had a fun bunch of hospital visits when I was younger.

Your swelled eye reminds me of the time when I got a case of severe chicken pox. The pox were pretty much anywhere and everywhere in sight, except for the two pox that happened to be one under each eyelid.

That was pleasant news to receive, that I could have went blind

But anyways, I hope for the best with your problem.

Sounds pretty interesting! I believe I heard of that happening to someone before. It doesn't seem to be a common thing that happens to people though. I also think it's funny how the eye doctor tells you that you have a slight chance of dying, like when does an eye doctor ever say that to someone, lol. He prolly got all excited because he finally actually got to tell someone that.

"He prolly got all excited because he finally actually got to tell someone that."

hahahaha.... that's probably true. The chance is probably so slight that it won't happen to me.... but still had to be mentioned for the sake of being able to bring up a chance of death from an eye related incident

If you die will you give me all your Viz in your will?

Is it getting better? Has the bubble popped yet?

I hope your eye gets better soon!

That is a truly interesting story with the obvious climax being:

"if it gets behind my eye it can cause an infection which could move into my brain and kill me."

Good luck with that. I guess as long as you follow those directions you'll be fine.

(Now I just went on this rant below about my own eyes. LOL, sorry about that, i couldnt help it and i couldnt stop typing once i started.)

I have worn contacts since i was about 11 because i refused to wear glasses. I straight up told the eye doctor and my parents i would break my glasses every day on purpose and there is nothing any of them can do about it so just give me my contact lenses.
Well now i'm 26 and i wear my contact lenses nonstop and sleep in them and everything. I know thats not good for my eyes in the long run but so far it hasnt caused any harm. When I take them out I can't see. LOL. And I need to use my eyes right up until the time i pass out. I'm in bed now and i need them to read words on this monitor right in front of me. So yea... my eyes are pretty bad but as long as they can make stronger contact lenses I'll be fine. I only go to the eye doctor about once every 2 or 3 years now because I wear my contact lenses for a few months extra to save money. LOL.

Dude, are you alright? Sounds pretty serious with the 'behind my eye it can cause an infection which could move into my brain and kill me'. Well, hope you get better.

I once got an eye infection, when I was about 7 years old. It turned out to be 'Conjunctivitis'. My eyelids felt like they were stuck together with glue every morning, and were extremely bloodshot (Swollen). When I finally got around to seeing the doctor, he said that it was a SEVERE case, and I had to have some sort of surgery. Well, it was scary, but now my eyes are better, except that I have to have about 8 eyedrops n both eyes daily. It comes around to about Aus$200-$300 per year.

Wow, that sucks Geeo. Once, a few years ago, I had an eye infection. Some puss got behind an eyelash, and my eye swelled up. Seriously, it got so bad that my entire eye had swollen up.

Wow, I hope you get better! I've had the same kind of thing twice before, but luckily it wasn't very bad either time and went away after about a week. The doctor never told me about the brain part though D: Maybe he was just trying to make sure I don't get scared or freaked out or something, lol.

Not too likely... but still a fun experience. It's not often an eye doctor tells you that you could die.

I wished that happens, oh and septembern, please give me one third of the Viz if he does send it to you ?

Sounds serious, not that I should care, I hope it is not painful and I hope you go to heaven.

I world hate something like that to happen, since I don't want to die by anything but old age.

Oh and if you do die, you broke the record of being the 1st active member, Mod, anything to die on the board, Chronabis almost broke that record but unlike you, I world actually be sad if he does break it, looks like another record to add and it will be my most favorite one.

P.S : Stepmebern, I don't know how he is going to give you the Viz if an infection the the brain means no going to the computer, loss of memory (dunno he/her own name, family members, and other stuff) and lots of doctoring coming in and out to check on am (actually, I wonder how we will even know if he does die ?)

P.P.S: another 100 word post... while I wanted to make it a short reply.

I'm the same as you, I didn't put it on a compress that much either, I just tried not to bug with it and it went away. I wear glasses too, and need them desperately. I'm at a -8 and -7.75, so sitting there without glasses renders me completely incapable. My second one lasted only about a week and a half, but my first one lasted almost three weeks. It wasn't so bad in the last two weeks, but the first one was really painful and everytime I touched my eyelid by accident it hurt really bad.

So, that's good it's starting to go away. It probably hurts a lot less, right? I hope it goes away soon!

oh, I'm not nearly that bad.... my prescription is about half that strong so I can see fairly well without my glasses. Plus it's only my left eye (the eye with the bump) that is the worse eye. So having a compress on that eye means I can still see.... but I can't do much while having to hold something on my eye like that =/

Okay, well that's lucky. My eyes make it so I can't even read a book without my nose touching the page, and they're still getting worse But I know what you mean, you're just kind of sitting there waiting, bored, and feeling like there's something you should be doing, at least to pass the time, but you have only one hand and one eye! That probably cuts your hand-eye coordination in half! lol

Mine were both in my right eye, so if it starts to come back after a while make sure to take care of it quickly, so it doesn't get as bad as your first one. My first one was a lot worse than my second, since I let it go for so long since I didn't know what it was. Once it's gone, be sure to check from now and then that no bump is coming back, since maybe you might have become prone to them and get them often. I haven't had any as bad as those two main ones, but every now and then my eyelid starts to feel a bit tender so I go and put a washcloth on it, and it goes away after a day or two.

I dunno if it's getting any better or not. I still see it and feel it, but like I said, I really haven't been doing enough compresses on it to actually make an impact. It's so annoying to do. What I need to do is watch a hockey game or something while doing it. Something where I'm happy enough sitting on the couch doing nothing but still able to see enough of what's going on.... I might have to do that.

That's a good idea. I would listen to music or hockey (especially since my last minor one was during the Olympics! ), or talk to my friends on skype. I kept my video off though, since I might've looked like an idiot with a washcloth plastered across half my face, lol

It's good to find something you can listen to, or something that you enjoy doing that's passive and doesn't involve you taking action. We have a really good local radio station, 100.5 the peak, and I listen to them a lot when I'm just sitting there.
