Look, I've read a couple of the original Bond books back in the day. I always see Tom Clancy type books right next to the Harlequin romance novels in grocery stores and in book stores when I'm hoping they got some classical stuff. To me it seems like a lot of these books are just fodder for those places. Convince me they're not.

What are some exceptional action / mystery / spy novels?

I think the original Hardy Boys is great for mystery and for action I don't think you can go wrong with Jack Reacher.
