With the rise of tiktok, now being more popular than vine at it's peak, videos have become the primary format for memes. With this leaves the simplicity of many memes, such as the #1 all time Doge meme, and in its place go extensive videos with long awaited punch lines.

Will meme culture continue in this way, or will there be a resurgence of the early 2000s memes that wore out most people.

Who knows, however we may speculate further...

Barathemos : No, I feel the worry of TikTok-esque videos surpassing the classic image memes is a bit unfounded. While yes, I too hate the spread of TikTok, I still commonly see image memes on platforms like Discord and such. Image memes will always be the ol' n' reliable.

Nah, the good ol' memes won't ever die. The GIF didn't totally replace JPG or PNG, stickers are both animated and still... TikTok may be here to stay for producing short funny videos, but it won't monopolize the scene no matter what Elon Musk does to social media.

There's also the plus side of the traditional memes, which is they're perfectly known by everyone, and even if they're old they can be used with no problem. What's more, the attempts of some TikTok videos to produce a different take on known memes have all suffered a mediocre faith and haven't killed the original meme.

We live in an era where variety is highly welcome, not only for the versatility but also because it allows you to see many different things in a time where basically anyone can produce content that 30 years ago was restricted to a small sector of the population. We also live in an era of revisiting anything that we deem old, so between one thing and the other, TikTok won't kill the memes just like the TV didn't kill the radio and the rest of similar examples.

I can't stand 90% of tiktok, most of it is just so stupid. But to be fair, most of the memes that I get from TikTok are through reaction videos on YouTube and those were already big before TikTok for vine, reddit reactions, and other video memes for years. So I don't think it really matters all that much.

Though for the most part, I'll still prefer to stick to a place like 9gag over TikTok any day.
