We need a post block feature for Vizzed.

While I've considered this site a sort of second home since not long after I joined, this place has been, still is to some extent, and will be, somewhat of a war zone. Not everyone's going to get along with each other, and we can't make them. The more notable users of the site of whatever period have always divided up into their circles and there's been friction. Not everyone's going to use it, but I feel like a block feature would've prevented some of the drama that's happened before, and it's not too late to get one up to prevent future drama.

The idea here is that the block feature would hide basically everything from the blocked person from your view. Private messages, posts, summons, all of it. It'll be that much easier to deal with harassment. We should also make it so someone can selectively reveal messages and posts from a blocked user somehow.

I also want to add that this isn't my idea and is something that I've seen more than a few users talk about during my stay. I feel like this is really something the community would want.

Interesting idea.

I agree that this would be useful. Although I also find that when 1 person is blocked the drama extends to everyone associated with the 2 people involved.

Still, at least it would be an option for a person being harassed to do something about it without having to wait for a mod to do something.

I like the idea, though I'd like to recommend that even if you have someone blocked, you have the option to see someone's blocked posts. Context in a forum setting is important after all.

(And make it clear that harassment should still be reported, along with being blocked)

Wow... Now this was something I said about years ago... Not on a thread but to a friend. I think it will help to put up this feature. I like zeros idea of though you have blocked that person you can still use an option to see if that person is still harassing you so if they are that person can then report to the mods about it. Better safe than sorry right?

geeogree : Yeah, it's unfortunate that all the petty fighting spills over into friends, friends of friends, etc. I'm all too familiar with how that goes since I can't help but be that guy that meddles in fights. I suppose all we can do on that front is try to convince people that taking sides doesn't help the problem any.

ZeroTails : Yeah, that's a good idea. We should give the option of letting someone selectively reveal specific messages and posts. Maybe something similar to how Discord handles blocks or just have it auto add spoiler tags. I'll add that to the opening post.

Eniitan : Now that you mention it, I probably should add to the first post that I can't take credit for the idea, nor would I try to, since it's something a large number of users have suggested over the years. It's definitely something that needs to happen and something I feel like the community would really want. I just figured I should do my part in seeing it happen since I'm up the ladder now.

Yeah. I wasn't suggesting that just because that sort of stuff happens that the option is a bad idea.... but that it was a likely result of this sort of feature.

I still think the idea has merit and if it can be implemented then I think it should be.

I also agree with giving people the option to read blocked posts. Blocking PM's or profile comments would be a good blanket thing but allowing the forum posts to still show up on occasion is a good idea.

Also, I think on the back end of things.... if someone who is blocked is sending messages or profile comments or summons to the person who blocked them it should get tracked somehow. That would help the staff get the jump on something like this.

I was thinking of the discord block messages when I suggested that so yea, but spoiler tags sound fine as well, if a bit clunkier.

This will NOT work unless it is implemented SITE WIDE and that is a HUGE task. I mean you got to add it to private messages, you got to add it to the boards, you got to add it to the comments, you got to add it to lots of other pages or your enemies will find ways around it and keep harassing you. It is a big task and I think that it might be more trouble then what it is worth implementing.

First of all, if someone is harassing you then they need to report that person. We got a ton of staff here to handle such problems.

Secondly, blocking someone will lead additional dramas and trouble. Folks may post "Why did so and so block me" on the boards. That itself will stir up some drama.

And then you come across issues like staff. What if staff were to block someone else in staff? Or what if users were to block staff? While functionality can be added in to prevent that, there are lots of loopholes in such a feature. I mean if it was added it would need to be evaluated properly to make sure all bases are covered.

If you are staff or become staff your block list should be emptied and your ability to block inaccessible, as a Vizzed official it is your job to deal with folks you may not like. As a vizzed user, you should be entitled to block folks you want EXCEPT Vizzed Staff. If a staff member is harassing you then that needs to be reported immediately to other staff.

Don't get me wrong, it is pretty neat idea if you could block someone from your profile and private messages. I personally don't need to use such feature. Others might though.

JigSaw : That's a fair point. I hadn't considered that you'd basically need to put in three different systems to make sure everything's covered. It might be better for this idea to wait for the complete rework of the private message system that David mentioned doing a while back, which, I would hope, would be a low priority considering some of the other security issues.

JigSaw : I don't think that would be necessary for site staff (read: RGR staff), but for local moderators and up? Yeah, I agree with you.

I thought of how we could do this as simple as possible. Here is my backend idea.

Step 1: Receive list of blocked users on every page of this site in some sort of function.
Step 2: Block from
- Profiles (if blocked user on list is found, redirect them, very easy to do)
- Private Messages (a bit more tricky, edits will be required on the submission form)
- Forum Posts (easy to implement, simply remove posts when printing the rows)
- Forum Threads (easy to implement, simply remove threads when printing the rows)
- Online Users (should not be too hard to implement in, follow same protocol as the forum posts and threads)
- Post Summons (most difficult area to implement... need to modify newthread, newpost, edit post pages leaving no holes in process)
- Site Comments (should not be too hard to implement, pretty much same as above)

Block User From:
- Private Messages
- User Profile
- Forum Posts
- Forum Threads
- Online Users
- Post Summons
- Site Comments
(any more pages or features I am forgetting?)

Now here is the big question, do we WANT users to know they are blocked? Or should we make it so the end user is unaware they are blocked? I think eventually they will find out

Since I am now assistant developer of Vizzed, I would love to implement this into the site if David were to allow me to. I got a pretty good idea of how I'd add it and if I had the access to add it, I could pretty much guarantee you that it could be added within one weeks time.

I think we don't want them to know if they are blocked. Let them figure it out on their own.

And I also think that staff should be able to get through a block.... at least the local mods should be able to. It really shouldn't be possible to avoid contact from a staff member. And if a staff member is harassing someone then there is a more serious problem going on.

I'd love to see the feature added.

It would be a great feature. I'm sure it would be some work for Davide7, but as the board increases in activity and we have a large mod team, davideo7 might have more time for feature implementation (we all truly hope).
As Geeo said, I think Staff would have to see through the blocks.

In addition to having them not know they're blocked, I think we should also put a stop to anyone publically saying they have them blocked or have blocked them or anything like that, that's always bad behavior. Though, I can't imagine modifying site rules is a very easy process in that regard, so I guess we'll just have to hope they don't be nasty.
