What are some incredibly incompetent or stupid things that you've heard people say regarding a video game or video games in general?


I'll start out with something that always bugged me when I was younger. Back before it was cool to be a gamer or a nerd (pretty much the 90s and earlier), a lot of kids in school would refer to video games as "Nintendo" and this for some reason always really annoyed me. I remember one specific time in middle school (which was probably around 1998) when a girl said something like "You play too much Nintendo" and I wanted to respond with a very technical response like "The Nintendo Entertainment System? Super Nintendo? I currently play PlayStation!" but I didn't, and that same person made similar comments before, referring to all video games as "Nintendo".


Another story, one far more recent lol. Recently at work, I was wearing a Super Mario shirt and a middle aged lady told me that she liked my shirt and I replied with excitement "You like Mario??" and she responded with "Who???" with a very confused look on her face and I explained to her that the character on my shirt was from a video game and she responded with "I don't really play video games." Ok then...

I remember as a kid trying to get my dad to play Mario Bros. on the NES and he seriously could not figure it out. He wouldn't run which meant he couldn't jump any of the pits on the first level. I'm not 100% sure if he played poorly so he wouldn't have to play or if he was just really bad at playing games. I really should ask him about it and see what he says now.

I've heard different ways of pronouncing Mario. One is Mar E O and the other is Mary O. The same with Pokemon. Some say Pok E Mon and others say Pok A Mon. It kind of annoys me when I hear the uncommon one said.

Definitely, in my case it must be advertising.

Videogames rarely get their title translated over here (thank god, it would be absolutely horrible if everything got translated and even more if the "Die Hard" example was repeated). Due to this, and the overall very low level of English of the population in my country, we get low quality advertisements that can almost make your ears bleed.

I don't watch much TV and it's not like that many games do get advertisements on that media over here, but the ones that do only are appealing until the game's title is announced. For example, pronouncing God of War as God-of-Wohr is the most recent example I can think of.

My country really sucks at this. Like, is it really that hard to try and pronounce just three words the way they should? You don't need to be an expert at English, just put a bit of effort.

For me one thing I had found really annoying when I was a kid was people calling every Pokémon a Pikachu. It's like sure ok there all Pikachu so there's no point in playing the game. Insert quick change of subject here so I don't have to explain there not all Pikachu lol.

My dad, I SWEAR, mispronounces on purpose. It's not 'Nintendo, not to him. It's 'NYETENDO' Pops, The science guy never had a thing to do with it. Oh, and of course, he says, 'pokeeMAN', with a detectable level of snark. But nah, should I point it out, I'm labaled a wiseacre, like the time I told him, "hey dude, in the NFL, if everytime your Minnesota team played, what if I said, 'how's the VAKONGS doing, instead of the Vikings?" My mom says "Dear, thats sports. Real life matters. It's different" I try telling them a football GAME is similar to a video GAME but hoo boy. Like my dad says, "it's just a vidya game". :

Nevermind the fact that there's an original score composed and performed, nevermind the fact that all of the visuals are the digital equivalent of sculpting or hand-drawn or complex pixel creations, never mind all the effort that goes into the animation, nevermind the programming that makes it all interactive and run like clockwork, nevermind the story writing and telling, nevermind the motion capture and voice acting, it's not art just because it's not a two million dollar pile of twisted scrap metal that serves as some kind of status symbol that my friends that have more money than taste or brains combined can gawk at pretentiously.

"Final Fantasy 7 is going to get a remake!"

How absurd... like that will ever happen. xD
