We learn stuff everyday without really realizing it. A lot of it might be random trivia and not particularly "useful", but I don't really believe there's such a thing as useless knowledge. If we share little bits of trivia we acquire daily, we learn that much more a day and others might find what you consider to be trivial to be very valuable.

Note that this may overlap with "This Day In History...". In the event that something you want to share does overlap, it would be better to pick one thread or the other to post in. Please don't cross post.

Today I learned:

that the younger deaf community in Japan likes to fingerspell interjections across their bodies as though they were sound effects being illustrated in manga,

That there are 18 grammatical genders in the Swahili language, none of which correspond to biological sex,

and that there are still many uncontacted tribes of people around the world that, if contact were established, would be extremely vulnerable to many illnesses we have immunities to.

Today I learned that the Uncharted is a great series, but you will die a bunch due to the camera work and enemy spawn timing sometimes.
It's a great game series... it just needs to be polished a little bit more, as is the case with all platforming RPGs.

TIL that the lead character of National Treasure is very sexist and a narcissist. He repeatedly mistreats his female companion with derogatory terms and speech, and belittles his male companion by looking down on his perceived stupidity. Yet he could not have gotten through it all without them, something he barely acknowledges. And yes, he "gets" the girl in the end. And she acts pleased.

I get the feeling that the audience is expected to believe this guy is smarter and overall, better than them. But certainly, many in the audience would not believe this. Because they figure out the clues before him. Some of the secrets are so obvious that many would be inclined to think the "geniuses" in the movie are actually idiots.

To be short, "National Treasure" is not a National Treasure.

While I already knew the Swastika had been around since ancient times and had read that it was used as a kind of calender by ancient people, today I learned that there is in fact a giant swastika calender in the sky.

m0ssb3rg935 : The study of changes of meaning is fascinating. The Swastika is one of the best known examples, I think. But there are also words and word roots: Awful, terrific, and an't (ain't or am not), just to name a few.

"Gee, that's terrific!"

tornadocam : Please let this be true.

Today I learned some gossip.  One of my older trainers, a 45 year old woman with adult children, is having 'relations,' with one of my super athletic, smart, well-rounded young trainers, a guy who's in his early 20s.

I would take action to discipline them for fraternization but the facility is closing in two weeks and we are ceasing operations anyway.  I don't care.  Good for both of them if they're having fun with each other.

The weird thing is that the guy is friends with the woman's sons.  That has to make for strange time spent together.

Why did you have to incorporate the swastika in your reply?

That makes me think you are a skinhead. I really dislike skinheads.

That's actually not funny at all bro to say you are a violent extremist (radical jihad).
I knew you were joking, I was too. However, a lot of people around the world are reading this and I don't want them to misinterpret.

tRIUNE : Yeah, I figured that's where you were going. I knew when I posted it that it could be a little controversial so I made sure to add the part about it being around since ancient times and used by many different people from the Celts to the Hindus. I can remove the pic if you think it'll be a problem but removing the visual reference kinduh renders the post pointless... I also thought it would be a more proactive approach to raise awareness that the Nazi Swastika is a bastardization of something predating it by millennia.

I learned today that in Denmark, it is illegal to burn any other national flag but not the Danish flag.

That's interesting to me.  I'm an American, a patriot, I fought in the Marine Corps, and I believe in personal freedom and the ability of Americans or others to burn the American flag.  I can understand why people go all nuts when they see protests or people stepping on the flag or burning it but I don't agree with the sentiment.  It's a flag.  I get it's a symbol but it's nothing more than that.

Let's all just relax about the flags, people.
