Justice League Heroes - The Flash
04-30-13 10:31 PM
No Flash In The Pan.
Billy, Jimmy, Haggar, Guy, Axel, Blaze and company better not blink because they just might get rocked by the red blur that is The Flash. Developers at Wayforward worked hard to play off this side story from the bigger console game Justice League Heroes and make it not only work, but to actually be a good game. Where most portable games are not made to be nearly as good as their console counterparts, Wayfoward turned what could have been a simple cash-in into a great albeit short little beat-em-up.

Gameplay: 8/10

The Flash sets himself apart from his other beat-em-up brethren with his greatest feature: speed. By holding down the A button and flicking the D pad in the direction of an enemy sends Flash whooshing over to that enemy lickedy-split! This combined with a solid little 4-5 hit combo will take down most early level enemies. Pressing and holding the A and B buttons at the same time will cause Flash to do a sort of leaping kick for getting over obstacles while also still on the offensive.
Further into the game The Flash will gain various other abilities to help him wipe out his foes with even more efficiency including the ability to slow down enemies allowing Flash to pummel an enemy twice as much. Throughout the game he also has opportunities to call on his Justice League team mates including Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green Arrow to wipe out all the enemies on the ground. The action is fluid and precise and you will quickly learn that utilizing all of The Flash's skills is absolutely necessary in order to get through the entire game.

Story: 2/10

While this game serves as a side-story to the console game Justice League Heroes its certainly put this story on the side. In between levels we are shown little comic snippets that look more like they were made for a newspaper comic strip than an actual comic book for Justice League or even Flash himself. Stilted dialogue leaves me entirely uninterested and un invested with th... Read the rest of this Review
Double Dragon Advance

A Fresh Take On An Old Favorite
Thugs have kidnapped your girlfriend! Now its up to you and your brother Jimmy to save her! Using the discipline of martial arts, Billy and Jimmy Lee must take to the streets and take out hundreds of thugs in order to save the girl! It's a tried and true story that remains both timeless and simple, but still very much effective motivation for the brothers to do what they do best! It's one of the grandaddies of side-scrolling beat-em-ups with refinements that make this particular GBA rendition a must-have for any fans of the series or owners of a Gameboy Advance.

Graphics: 7/10
For a GBA title these graphics are as good as they can be. The characters are large and detailed well. Unlike the old NES port, there is no slowdown when multiple enemies appear on screen. The action remains fluid. The one problem I've noticed is that sometimes it can be impossible to see exactly where a dropped weapon may be due to the dark color of the weapon and the floor.

Gameplay: 5/10
Let's be honest here, Double Dragon on the NES didn't have perfect controls either, and neither does this one. While simple to a first timer picking up the game, for veterans they will find themselves getting frustrated with some of the new moves. When punching you may find yourself stuck in place, throwing an extra punch of 2 after you've stopped hitting the button. Sometimes you may want to mount your opponent and pummel them, but I found that after getting only 1 or 2 punches in the enemy will immediately push you off them. Oh and the infamous dragon kick is still as hit or miss as it has ever been. But do not let this worry you, prospective gamer! This game is still great fun to play and with enough time you WILL become an expert at handling the brothers Lee.

Sound: 5/10 The sound is very much average at its best. Much of the music is rehashed from the original games, as this port IS one of the original games, only enhanced. It works for what it is but never goes out o... Read the rest of this Review

Rock'em Sock'em Robots

How to be the best Rockin' Sockin' Robot!
So you wanna be the greatest Robot in all of the..ring? OF COURSE YOU DO!! Well look no further for I will be your guide as you set your robofeet firmly down on the mat and put up your dukes for some INTENSE punching action!

Rule 1: A.B.A.G.
"Always Brings your A Game"!
Don't ever enter the ring without being prepared! Make sure you got your joints greased up and a fresh coat of red, blue, green, yellow, or white paint, depending on your robot fighter color of choice! You want to look your best before pulverizing your enemies with your swift jabs and punishing left hooks! Also, don't forget to study up on your robot boxing! There is a wealth of information found in the instruction manual for the original Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots toys from the 1970s!! Or you could use wikipedia!!! LOTS OF INFO!

Rule 2: Punch a LOT
The secret to victory lies within your hands! With your right fist you will be punching your adversary, and with your left fist...you will be punching your adversary also. The key to winning any Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots fight is by successfully PUNCHING your opponent a great number of times until eventually they will explode into bolts, gears, nuts and possibly even catch fire!

Rule 3: Don't get punched a lot!
Getting punched a lot hurts whether you are a human being or a Rock 'em Sock 'em Robot. Just because you are a giant deathdealing punch machine that feels no pain does not mean that you cannot be defeated! In order to be the best punch machine, you must DO the punching rather than BE punched.

Another thing to take note of: JUMPING is a fantastic new feature of Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots that allows you to better avoid being punched in the face. The Red Rocker and Blue Bomber are both able to leap daintily in the air at double their own height! This new gameplay mechanic was never before used in previous installments from this classic series and is a welcome addition! So the ... Read the rest of this Guide
