Blackthorne Featured Review

Blackthorne Review by: xfighter1138 - 0/10
At first, I wanted to do a review of this game on the SNES or GBA but I decided to do something different for today and to look at different version of this excellent game by Interplay. A prince of persia style adventure game set into a bleak future where an emotionless man walks around with a shotgun and is probably one of the best ports/games for the 32x which is a sad rarity since most of the 32x games were indeed garbage ports of arcade games.

Blackthorne is about a planet named Tuul who are ruled by this genius shaman. Then the latest ruler does not know who to pick as ruler for his sons so he decides to kill himself. For some reason, he becomes two stones of light and darkness. Each future ruler picks up the stone and rule their kingdoms. And basically the ruler of the good kingdom needs the kill the ruler of the bad kingdom since he was mercenary before hand.

In Blackthorne, you'll have to advance through levels like a typical platformer. You'll see disturbed images of prisoners that need your help and if you do help they'll give you a reward like a potion or grenade which will help you out in the future. Some will team up with your later in the game to kill off an orc but you can just kill them with your shotgun. Blackthorne has a bit of a mixed bag difficulty to it depending on the wonky controls, moving back to hide from the enemy can be a pain to kill and some platforming jumps are just hell. The whole game is about a dark future with mysterious settings that have a fantasy style to it. Orcs, spiders, starting off in a mine, and a massive forest with huge trees and a big tower (I wonder where that's from?)

The difference with the SNES and 32x version is that the graphics are far superior however the music is just beyond horrid. While it may have that dark creepy theme to it, it's just really unclear and hard to listen to.

At the end, Blackthorne is an awesome platforming shooter that has an impressive storyline and atmosphere to it. It gives out a reason why you should try out the 32x on here.

Overall: 8.8
