Shmups are my favorite game genre (besides rpg) and takes up most of my gaming time. I really only play touhou, but I'm looking for another series to give a go. Give me a recommendation for a Shmup, and maybe a story about why you like it.

For my favourite, it would likely have to be either the Parodius games, or Twinbee. (but only with a partner)

Parodius is too awesome for words, and Twinbee is one of the best co-op games I have played in a long time. You might want to try Parodius Da! and Pop'n Twinbee.

I don't know if this qualifys, but State of Emergency for PS2 was and still is one of my favorite games. And most of the time you're shooting people up, a lot, so much that it's comical. It's not in the same style as gradius but you're still..you know..shooting people up.
