Using his skills as a puppeteer, he gains physical control over Malkovich, who is in love with the business partner that is selling access to the portal to tourists, but she is actually in love with the puppeteers wife, but only when she is in control of Malkovich. That's not much of a spoiler, but how the movie begins.
