This is the thread in which I share a poem a day with the world. That means you guys. I wrote this one not too long ago and was loosely based on the song of the same name by The Avett Brothers. It's one of the favorite of the things I've written. You can find all my work here: https://allpoetry.com/Klinton_Helms

Once I was a Carpenter:

Once I was a carpenter,
Made furnishings and floors;
I scraped out a living
By carving simple doors.

I worked the job of Jesus,
So nobly I pressed on,
But after 50 years,
My life was nearly gone.

I planned my last vacation,
S'at San Francisco Bay;
The woodwork ran beneath my feet,
Pushed out and swept away.

I longed for wood beneath my hands,
The sturdier, harder build.
The fragile sand upon the shore
Was all too quick to yield.

I flew back to my shop
And passed out before the mat,
So close! I'd hoped I'd manage
To scrape until I's flat!

I'm now beneath the scalpel,
Others contemplate my fate.
They shape and mold my body
Til' it can hold its weight.

Soon I will be remade, strong,
But nearer to my death;
As I shape the wood once more,
And take my final breath,
I'll pour into it all my will,
My trunk into the grain,
I'll burn away the excess
And feel an end to pain.
