School uniforms are seen by many as either a good or a bad thing. On one hand, they bring about unity, pride, and the like. However, they might also be quite costly, violate children's rights, and could possibly remove a student's individuality. What do you think?

My school didn't have uniform, and it led to students dressing in very awkward ways. I even went once with a sleeveless shirt in my early teens during the last days of the course, and nobody gave a damn. Other people were sent home to dress up correctly, but only in very specific cases.

Personally, I'd want school uniforms to be mandatory. At scholar ages, dressing with whatever you have may lead to another reason for being bullied, which almost happened to a cousin of mine when her school discarded uniforms. A uniform puts you in the same spot as everyone, and somehow avoids turning every single day into a carnival.

Violating a children's rights? I don't see why. If there was just one uniform for everyone in the school there would be nothing like that. You cannot go to school like if you were to a bar, but since there are non-written requirements that nobody follows or enforces then party hard. They may be costly, but some people can wear more costly clothes if allowed to wear what they want, so once again, equality is our goal.

Removing your individuality?
Au contraire. One of my cousins has grown to hate skirts because of the uniform, so we can say it shaped her personality in a way that would have never happened by itself, or at least in a less conflictive way. I'm sure that it can also be the opposite, getting used to the uniform determines the kind of clothes you'll like as an adult. With a single uniform for everyone this would open up the childrens' curiosity to try out other clothes, further helping in shaping their personality.

I probably would have hated to wear uniform while at school, but when you're a kid there are very few things you don't hate about school. As an adult now, looking back in time I'd have preferred to wear uniform, not for me but for the rest of people. You can't go to school in flip-flops or with unbuttoned shirts, a uniform would put them in their place until they finish mandatory school (the system we use in Spain, should be middle-school more or less).

I wrote a school article sorta about this. I rather have restrictions instead of a single uniform. Only because what kind of uniform has shorts and short sleeved shirts? I need that stuff.

However, everyone should be enforced to wear Light-Up SkechersTM. That's the only uniform that should ever be enforced.

tfw I struggle to come up with a good reply because I go both ways.

I mean, I'm both for and against school uniforms. I don't see a problem either way. Without school uniforms, people can freely express themselves, but with school uniforms, people are all unify and no one is bullied for trying to express their individuality.

I believe that everyone should have the freedom of expression with the clothing they choose. You can get to know a lot about someone just by what they're wearing.

If I was required to wear a uniform to my school, several people wouldn't have asked me about my belief in God. I'm glad to be a Christian but not go to a Christian school because I have more opportunities here to be bold.

Also, the environment would feel boring for me if everyone was wearing an identical set of clothes. I like to look around the classrooms and hallways to see that there are people who like to be different from the rest.

When I was still attending school, I couldn't have been more against the idea of wearing uniforms. I was a teen of the 90s! No one was going to stifle my individuality! (lol)

Now that I'm older...I see things differently. Uniforms even the playing field so to speak. No one has to worry about what to wear at school. If they can afford "cool" clothes and people don't have to worry about being made fun of for what they wear.

I mean you can still wear whatever you want when you get out of school. Besides, once you graduate school, unless you are lucky, you won't be able to wear what you want at your job...

I can't stand the idea of a uniform, especially because of the cost factor. I know someone who needed a uniform but they couldn't just get one, they needed a bunch of different outfits to last the week which cost them over $2000 per school year.

The unity aspect is nice, but in cases it can get too strict.

Well when I was in Middle School they just started the dress code. We had to wear navy or khaki pants or shorts. Our shirts had to be polo shirts (any solid color). Logos had to be less than 2.5 inches. The school board said it would make everybody I kid you not feel equal, make people feel more comfortable, stop bullying for not having cool clothes. Shortly after 9/11 when I was in high school they banned cargo pants/shorts because due to the threat of terrorism. They also said all of these would bring grades up and create a place for learning. Another thing they tried when I was a senior was they tried to make everybody wear red, white and blue. Those colors happened to be our school colors. But at this time we (USA) had just invaded Iraq and the school wanted a patriot theme. Parents said no that the school should not try to promote politics. So that was scrapped.

Well about 6 years after I graduated. The school board got a wake up call. Grades did not go up in fact they went down. Bullying for not wearing cool clothes went up. The Rich students still wore fancier clothes. Not everybody felt equal. Test scores plummeted. Students complained as well as parents. Also the Cargo pant ban did not stop students from bringing knives and they realized it would not be effective of stopping a terrorist. So they scrapped the dress code all together.

The funny thing was it took them 12 years to realize what others had said. That the dress code would have no significant impact.

In April, May, August, September and even October we hated the dress code. Mainly because it is normally hot during those months and it made us feel uncomfortable.

I think there needs to be some guidelines. My former school's dress code is pretty reasonable and one that I could support. Students can wear Jeans as long as they are no holes in them. Shorts must come to the top of the knee. T-shirts are okay. Shirts and jackets with sports teams are okay as long as no profanity. Shirts promoting politics, vulgarity, profanity, violence are banned. Religious shirts are okay as long as they do not mock other religions.

I hate the idea of a school uniform or a dress code. Just let students wear what they want. As long as they don't wear clothes that promote hate speech and stuff like that there should be no problem. Like I always wear a hoodie and I don't think I've ever seen a school uniform with a hoodie before.

Why do you even need them all to look the same? What does that actually do that would be beneficial?

To be honest, I wouldn't actually mind wearing a school uniform, if anything it would save me the hassle of figuring out what I want to wear to school each morning.

It wouldn't bother me if I looked like everyone else around me. I've never been one to dress up in a flashy, stand-outish way to begin with, so I wouldn't mind wearing a school uniform and "blending in" with all the other students. It wouldn't bother or affect my individuality in any meaningful way.

It might be costly to have a school uniform, but if it became a reality you would most likely save a lot of money during the back to school shopping season. Every year my parents have to spend hours at the store shopping for clothes that fit and look good, but end up costing a fortune between three children. I'm not saying it would be a huge money saver or anything, but shopping for clothes for school is usually a considerable part of the back to school shopping experience.

Altogether, I'm open to the idea because it would save me some time each morning by knowing exactly what I'll be wearing to school that day, plus, I like the idea of a sharp, dressy look when going to school, personally.
