I don't know if anybody else has heard about this, but Nintendo has scheduled a relaunch of the Super Nintendo (like they did for the original Nintendo) later this year. I'm... well I'm excited, I'm skeptical, and I'm kind of angry. When they did this with the original, it flew off the shelves and then they discontinued it completely after I think a month (I could be and am probably wrong on the exact timeframe). This feels like it could be a repeat of the same thing.

I'm wondering what your thoughts are on this. Did anybody here actually manage to purchase one when they re-released the original Nintendo?

  up until now this is actually the first time I have heard of nintendo relaunching the super nintendo in fact the only new nintendo system I have heard of them making is the nintendo go so I can,t really say if it,s going to be any good or not I guess it just depends on how popular it becomes but I,m guessing that even if it becomes quit popular they will probably eventually come out with something else just so they can keep trying to outdo their competitors

I would buy one if they didn't come with pre installed games on them, or an option to install others.  I am not sure if there is a way to add other games after you purchase the console, but some how I doubt it.  I heard that the Super Nintendo is only coming equipped with 21 games, and I don't remember what the Nintendo came with, but it was somewhere around there.  I imagine they sold out fast because they chose not to make more than they knew wouldn't sell.  With the size, they could easily put every single game made onto each one, and probably even make a dual NES/SNES box with close to every game.  THAT would be worth me opening my wallet

As for this - I would buy it if it came with more games. The fact that the SNES relaunch only has 30 games or so seems kind of lame. There are easily 100 games that you could pick from that were great and while the 30 they picked are quite good there are plenty that would be good to include.

However, with emulating I can play any of the games so I don't feel the need to pay money for something I've been doing for the last 10+ years.

Still, I understand why they did this. It's an easy cash grab from people looking for the nostalgia of playing these old games properly again.

Considering they sell the games at a premium on their eShops and whatnot, I'd consider it a great deal on their part. Not only is it great for people that don't play video games, and want that quick nostalgic hit of games from their childhood, but they also get a nice little box that plugs into their televisions without complicated billing or anything like that. It's especially good for that untapped market of those that aren't tech savvy.

Two controllers and 30 games for 100 dollars here, that's a good deal.

Personally, I can emulate all of these games, and if I wanted to get crazy, I can get all of them on my Android Box and hook a bluetooth controller to it.

It's good for people that don't want to deal with all that, or don't know how.

My main concern is the availability, with the amount of demand for the NES classic that was not met when the console was discontinued, they could have made a killing off of it but didn't really care, as long as they made enough to remain in money until the release of the Switch.

They said they were really upping the production of this one, so I really hope there's nobody out there having to spend hundreds to get their hands on one, but you never know.

I'm really excited for the release of Star Fox 2. Finally.

   Personally though I didn't get the NES classic, due to the fact that you can pretty much play this games by emulating it like Alex and Geo said. Also, I didn't really have enough money to buy it though, mostly due to the supply and demand that the NES Classic soon starting to ran out of stocks for most markets. The price I believe I saw for one NES Classic was about 115 pounds, which turned me off into wanting to buy it.
   As for the Super Nintendo re launch, I'm actually less skeptical about it. One, due to the fact that personally that the Super Nintendo games are better than the NES ones, and two the Star Fox 2, which is finally released, which made me wonder what the final version of the game look like rather than the beta, and finally the good price of the SNES classic.
   Though the thing I'm worried about is the amount of pre-orders this thing has, and I wonder if Nintendo realizes the "mistakes" the NES classic has.

I originally thought it was a good thing at first with the NES mini, but now I'm thinking it really isn't all that great of a deal. For Nintendo I guess it is good because they're making money. I feel like there are a lot of people that still want to play retro games, but when I looked at the list of games for the NES mini and the future SNES mini I was pretty disappointed. Neither console has all that many games. The NES mini had Mega Man 2 but not Mega Man 1? It seemed like a good idea for people that didn't have internet or a computer, and I guess it was but then it got discontinued. Why? If something was that popular and making money why stop making it?

Like others have pointed out, it would also be nice if there was a way to add more games to the console and also what about saving? With emulators you can save and come back to it later. I don't know if they have a save state system, but from what I've seen on YouTube it didn't. The in-game save feature in games like Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country don't work as well, and in other games without the in-gave save (Super Mario Bros. 3) save states are a necessity. If Nintendo wanted to make a good product for Retro Gamers they would make something with more games, a way to add more games to the console, and (if they don't have this) a save state feature.  

Sega did something similar to this last year, and I've got one of those things and ....... you'll have to play it to see for yourself. Let's just say I feel like I wasted money on that thing. Luckily, it wasn't all that much, and I guess I got what I paid for. That console had even less games on it. The only games I cared about playing were Sonic 1 and 2, but it wasn't same Sonic that I knew and loved. I hope the quality of the Nintendo games are better, and they probably are and that's great for people that don't have internet or a computer. Still, I think it would be to Nintendo's benefit to do the things I talked about. 

I would like to point out that the SNES classic mini, is not a re-launch of the system by any means.

This is a console with a set of pre-loaded games on it. Sort of like an emulation station.

I personally think the release is great for people that just want a convenient way to play the games they enjoy without having to mess with too much downloading or configuring. This isn't marketed to people who already know emulation and have been doing it for like 20 years like I have. This is for the average person that grew up with these games and just wants an easy way to play them again. It's got a great lineup of games that will be in huge demand.

The possible issue? The same as it was for the NES version. How many is Nintendo going to create and will it actually be obtainable for those that actually WANT ONE, and not just the scalpers trying to re-sell them online for crazy money???

I personally got disgusted during the NES Mini fiasco, and decided to invest and build a retropie station. Now I have a console that plays and stores everything from Vextrex to PS1 and I couldn't be happier. So now, despite the fact that the SNES mini would be cool to have, I fear this situation will be similar to last Xmas season when NES minis were nowhere to be found.

The SNES Mini looks really cool, yeah. But as some people have already said, it's probably going to be ridiculously hard to find like the NES Mini. People ended up camping outside at Best Buy just for a chance to get a NES Mini. I wonder why Nintendo made the NES one so hard to find? Did they just severely underestimate demand? Do they not want to compete with Virtual Console (when it's out on Switch)?

It looks cute to put it simply. I think some people even if they don't like the games on the system... (which I doubt) then they'll still buy it for that reason alone.... And nostalgia of course. 

As for what has been said, I feel this is going to go the same way as the nes mini console.... simply because Nintendo seem to have a weird idea that limited availability means profit... Either that or they made them at a solid loss to begin with and decided to count their losses before it was demanded even more.... which honestly seems like business suicide but whatever....


If you want one and get one for the retail price.. Great.. But  as Jordan said don't go wasting your money on which is essentially a physical emulator in a cute box. 

I personally believe that this whole "release-and-then-make-it-super-difficult-to-obtain" thing is just a big marketing ploy. If you make the NES Classic super difficult to find, its value is going to increase dramatically. Now they're re-releasing it, and of course, people will now be scouring the internet and their local stores to get one. I'm guessing that the same will happen with the SNES Classic, or something similar.

   As somebody who has the NES classic, lots of people are wrong in this thread.

The lineup of games are pretty good and considering it is a collector item and has 30 games it is a pretty good deal in my opinion.

The SNES games are longer and better but they kept the system around the same price so I do not see what people are complaining about.

It's nice to know they have save states, but I wonder how long this console is going to be around. Both the NES mini and the SNES mini sound like good ideas for people, like myself, that know nothing about emulation and sometimes have limited access to a dependable computer. I guess there is no way to include every game out there, and I can live without certain ones. I only wonder if there are still any NES minis available to the public. I've heard they have been discontinued, and the ones that are still in stores are very expensive because they were so popular. This is a good idea for Nintendo to offer most of the classic retro games to those who don't have good computer access and don't know how to set up emulators, but how many of these consoles will be available and how long will it last?

It's tempting. I would consider it. But I really only pay attention to Nintendo when they come out with new handhelds now. Like actually new ones not just remakes. I hear the NES relaunch had some issues with reading memory. Also, what is the point in an NES, if you don't have to scream and pretend blowing air into a game, makes it work. 

I'm going to admit, the only reason why I'd get it is because of Starfox 2, I've played the original and beaten it but I'd just get it for that really. 

And why would you need it otherwise when you have sites like these?
