This question has been killing me for a while now. Oddly enough, I hear it all the time when I'm listening to an Atlanta sports talk radio station. It came up again last night and I wondered if I would ask it on here, since I haven't already seen it. Also, July 4th is coming up soon so I'm pretty sure there will be a ton of people eating these things in the near future.

But is a hot dog a sandwich? Yeah its wrapped in bread, and you can cover it in condiments. Its also just as American a food as lets say a hamburger. And I know a lot of people around me that think the same thing ... and that is they say "No. Its just a hot dog." From what I have seen from this so far, the people on both sides have great points. You need the bread in order to make the hot dog complete, but that's just the thing. Its not actually called a sandwich ... its just "hot dog." I'm not sure what to think.

Help me out here!

Whaaaaa, I guess a hot-dog is a sandwich by definition, though I've never really thought about it! That's super funny to think about though lol.
I guess apparently anything that consists of meat or cheese (or even other fillings?) between 2 or more slices of bread or a split roll, is considered a sandwich. Does that mean a hotdog is technically more of a sandwich than an ice cream sandwich?
This is such a strange yet interesting question.

p.s. I did not know cakes and wafers were considered to be bread.

Uh, I am pretty sure a sandwich would have to involve at least a slice of bread, but hot dogs have buns of bread instead of slices, so pretty sure the answer is no. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

According to the definition of a sandwich, "an item of food consisting of two pieces of bread with meat, cheese, or other filling between them, eaten as a light meal.", no, a hotdog is not a sandwich.

The hotdog bun is only 1 conjoined piece of bread, and are not meant to be ripped apart into two different halves.

Anyway, no hot-dogs are not sandwiches. They are made of 2 or more slices of bread (separated) with stuff inside - that's why a hamburger fits the definition. Besides, different kinds or similar meals (burrito, taco, wrap) have different names for a reason: they are not quite sandwiches

Hot Dogs are sausages... as in from Germanic area foods while sandwich was originally from the earl of sandwich as in English food.  There's actually a good history of the hot dog on consumerist.  Wieners are from the recipe from Austria leaning frankfurters are more along the Frankfurt Germany recipe though seems there's region/brand variation on the recipes
