So as most people know the United States hasn't built up or increased the amount of nuclear weapons they have in oh let's say the past 50 years, so with that said our nuclear weapons are very outdated and operating on technology based from 50 plus years ago now with that said other more aggressive and non passive countries on the other hand have been building and expending there amount of nuclear weapons and strategic missiles which in all honestly scares me because what if they challenge the United States would be be able to to stand our ground on that front?, could another country take us off our high horse and remove us from the number 1 power in the world?

With that said here's something to think about what if North Korea,Russia, China, India decides one day "you know the american's have been at the center of and running the world's economy for far too long, let's call there bluff and see just how strong they really are maybe its high time a new country becomes the number one player on the world stage". Would we be able to defend our self's and answer that bluff on such outdated equipment? Would we be able to fight on equal terms with countries with the latest in nuclear weapons or break even with them? The whole point of nuclear weapon build up is to show basically to other countries that we can match or even do better than what your bringing to the table so either fall in line and do the right thing or suffer the consequences which in all honestly that's the mentality we inflict on other countries but as of lately other countries have been breaking past agreements of nuclear weapon build up and what's to stop them from threatening us, they know our weapons are out dated and haven't even been tested to actually work in the upper end of 50+ years...maybe it's high time we open up the old nuclear arms missile facility and expand and update our nuclear war heads just to remind a few hostile countries to knock it off with the testing and build up of nuclear weapons and that the United States isn't to messed with and re-enforce our position in the world.

So I ask you what do you think about nuclear weapon build up in the United States? Is it time for us to "get back in the game" so to speak? So we update our nuclear arms and remind our "friends" and enemies of the world the power of the United States so that way they can begin to fall in line again?

Divine has a good point. You have all these little crap countries like North Korea threatening to launch nukes. And their last demo has Japan and South Korea on edge, which I do not blame them. But I think Divine forgets one little sticking point of a nuke. They are really only good for deterrent value. No civilized country actually wants to launch one. They are there for deterrent mostly.

As for the tech operating the nukes, yes they may be a bit outdated, but that might be our saving grace. They are not connected to the Internet. In a last ditch effort, when the call is made,a call is made to the missilers manning the weapon. They will both receive a message and 2 authenticators (a code). This must match exactly before the message is determined to be real. Then they must both insert their launch keys and turn the key at the same time.

Nuclear weapons are all about show. Everyone in the world wants to or has already developed them, but to date, we're the only nation in the world that has used them. Should we open up the stockpiles, dismantle them and then build new ones with the recycled materials? Yes. We can call it "routine maintenance". Honestly though, I don't believe we'll ever see another nation use a nuke for a very, very long time. The results of the test alone are enough to be a deterrent. Could the D.P.R.K. be stupid and crazy enough to do something? It's possible, but their delivery systems are a joke and, if I'm not mistaken, they're still using outdated tech like gun barrel type Uranium bombs, not unlike Little Boy. Nothing to sneeze at of course, but it's still relatively puny. I think Iran is more likely to be a threat, and they just elected a supposed "moderate".

In short, starting development on nuclear weapons again could give some bad impression, especially given all the hype about the Trump election, and could cause another cold war and arms race. If there's a way to inconspicuously update and verify the the potency of our existing arsenal, that would be optimal.

It doesn't matter what the actual count is. No one, except maybe North Korea, is going to actually deploy nukes. Russia and China are too heavily invested in the world and our economies are too intermixed for them to use nukes on us.

I see a limited nuclear exchange possible between Pakistan and India but the United States generally uses nuclear weapons as a means of saying, "We're really strong and we have them. Don't worry about how many there are, there are enough to end you, whoever you are."

The challenging thing is there are no major governments who will take on the United States in formal war demanding nuclear weapon deployments. ISIS doesn't have defined borders. Other militant groups fighting in South America, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, etc, are set up in such a manner that they are fluid. They can't be nuked.

Nukes were good for the 60s and 70s and even the early 80s. Then McDonald's arrived in Moscow and the Forbidden City. We don't need nukes now. They drink Coca-Cola, wear Levi jeans, watch Hollywood movies, and our cultures are too interchangeable to use nukes.

Divine Aurora : Nuclear arsenal does not need anything. It works just fine. The computers used cannot be hacked because they cannot access the internet. That's about as secure as you can get. The missiles work just fine. They deactivate and test one every so often, and they do everything they're supposed to. And even if a few fail, we have enough nukes to destroy the whole world. Even if half the nukes fail, we still have enough to destroy the whole world.

The US is one of out 12 countries that have nukes or could launch one. The others being: Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Israel, Iran, Pakistan, India, China, and North Korea. Canada, Norway, and Japan could make them if they needed too.

The countries I think are the biggest threat are Iran, Pakistan and North Korea. Iran has broken treaties several times. Iran has also said they want to blow Israel and the USA off the map. Iran also funds terrorist organizations. So its possible Iran could fire or sell a nuke to terrorist organizations. However, the country that I think is the most troublesome is Pakistan. Pakistan has the Taliban and Al Kada in it. Also how Pakistan is with the USA depends on who is in power. If a Pro Taliban person is in power that could be very concerning. Because would that person fire a Nuke as a terrorist act ? Could happen. North Korea could also fire and I believe would not hesitate to fire. The good news is North Korea lacks the technology to fire a long range one.

Currently Russia, has the largest stockpile of Nukes. America is second. American Nukes have been upgraded but not since the 1980's. Reagan's star wars program upgraded some of our Nukes. I have read were a modern Nuke would be 10 times more powerful than the ones we dropped on Japan.

So yes I believe we could defend ourselves. Also like Russia our Nukes have very long range capabilities.

I think we might need to upgrade some but I don't think we need to add more nukes. Here is why. Understand nukes are very very destructive. People that are not killed directly often are poisoned and burned that they eventually die. If we started increasing our stock pile. It might cause other countries to get nukes.

One country that would be very bad to have a nuke is Saudi Arabia. That is because most terrorist that have struck America have come from that country. If they get Nukes cause we have more. Then it opens the door for other countries in the Middle East to get nukes such as Turkey, Lebanon,  Syria, Yemen, and these have also supplied weapons to terrorist. Increasing Nukes may cause countries like Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela, Bolivia and others. Cuba, Venezuela and Bolivia are very hostile toward the States.
