Has anyone ever experienced river effect snow? The same properties that make lake effect snow pretty much make this stuff. It wasn't as bad where I was but areas to the south (maybe 10-15 miles) got anywhere between 1-3 inches with a few spots getting 2-4 inches. No weather watches except for special weather statements were issued for this very rare event. If you want, you can read more about this event and how it happens here.

If you think about it, everyone knows what river effect snow is without even hearing the term. If you know what lake effect snow is then you'll automatically know what river effect snow is as those two are the same thing except for the body of water used.

I bet a large number of people don't know what lake effect snow is, even if the name seems to make it obvious. It's when a cold body of air passes over a warm body of water. The warm water heats the lowest part of cold air, adding humidity. That air cools again over land and now there's a ton of snow being dumped. Lake Michigan and large bodies of water usually make this happen from west to east wind patterns.

River effect? I mean, I guess it can happen when the river is called the Mississippi or the Missouri or it's a big river. Most little rivers simply don't have an impact from a weather standpoint to create more snow than usual. I live in Michigan by a river and we don't get any more snow than the areas around us without water features.

Lake effect snow is when cold air from an energy source (usually a low pressure system) mixes with the lake temp. To have lake effect snow you have to have the following set up. There has to be cold air below 32 degrees (0 Celsius ) at the surface on the land. Then you have to have an energy source. The energy source draws up moisture from the lakes. The lake's water temp has to be above freezing. That is how you get lake effect snow. The lakes keep supplying the moisture. Areas farther inland are away from the energy source and do not get as much. Lets look at Cleveland and Akron Ohio as examples. 

Cleveland Ohio often gets lake effect snow. Lets say Cleveland's surface temp is 30 degrees (-1 Celsius) A storm system is coming in. Lake Erie's water temp is 45 degrees (7 Celsius) the lake supplies the storm system with moisture. The moisture and snow clouds form over the lake but when they move on shore since it is below freezing it snows and keeps snowing till the storm passes. Akron is south of Cleveland but are not really effected by the lake temps and are far away from lake Erie.  That is why Cleveland may get 10 inches from the lake effect but Akron may just get 4 inches of snow. The great Salt Lake has the same effect on Salt Lake City Utah. 

Large Rivers can cause the same effect for cities around them. In America the Mississippi, Missouri, and Colorado Rivers are big enough to cause this effect. That is why cities among these rivers may get more snow than areas farther away.  Bismarck North Dakota is a good example. Bismarck since it sits along the Missouri River sees an enhancement of Moisture. Bismark often gets more snow than areas farther away from the river. For example the river creates the effect Bismarck may get 8 inches of snow while areas farther away may get 3 inches. 

Another City has an unique effect for snow. Great Falls Montana has two reasons why they get more snow than cities around them. Great Falls is right by the Rocky Mountains so they have cold air coming from the Rockies. The Rockies also pull more moisture in Meteorology we call this Oceanic lift. Great Falls also sits along the Missouri River. So you have the mountains squeezing out moisture than you have the river supplying moisture. This was evident in January. In one storm Great Falls got 9-12 inches of snow. Towns around Great falls except those with high elevations got less typically 4-6 inches.
