I am thinking about getting Vocal lessons... That should be self explanatory. But what I really want to know is are there any members who know someone or have taken vocal lessons? Are they worth it?

Now to be clear, I am not a beginner at singing... I can match any note on the bass register. (with some limited falsetto.) But, I can't really sing Rock, especially since my voice is too clear. I have 0% distortion... No Rasp, no distortion, no growl... (If you need me to define that more, I can, just ask.)

Artists like Axl Rose, AC-DC, Mick Jagger, and the Animals all use at least limited distortion using there voice. My problem, is I am afraid to ruin my voice trying to figure out how to do that sound without help. But, I don't know if it's worth about $200+ a month. To me, that's a LOT of money for that. Also, I need to find someone who comes recommended...

Now, YouTube, only has so much, and it only helps with a taste of the lessons. There are no real free lessons for that. I'm willing to pay good money for someone I know is good/worth it. I have been looking into Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy, but that seems WAY overpriced, I have tried Evynne Hollens. (Haven't gotten a response about openings yet.) So, I thought I'd try the Vizzed community!

Thanks for reading, please keep it relevant! If you need any more info before answering, just let me know!

While I myself don't have much to add to this, I'd like to say it is worth it. If you can pay it go for it. It is an investment on yourself. I have a very soft voice but when I sing I sound like two cats being strangled - it sucks lol because I love to sing; I am very passionate in that aspect. I'm currently investing money on something else I want to fix but otherwise, I'd be all over vocal classes. I did search online and found just little hints here and there on what to do to exercise your voice and one thing that stuck with me is that it recommends that you "sign the vowels not the consonants in a word" that did help me a bit in sounding like I am actually trying to sing lol.

But, if you are going to spend money make sure it is well worth it- not every academy delivers to expectations. Hope you're able to find one that works well for you! And definitely go for it.

As long as they aren't too expensive I think you totally should go for it. Being able to have talent and skill such as that would be an amazing thing.

I kinda want to do the same but I don't really know. I might be better at whistling honestly

yoshirulez! : I actually found free lessons, but the person giving them is a friend of the family. But I've been trying to get other stuff set up, just in case that doesn't work out. I have been listening to vocal coaches on YouTube, but they can only help so much without hearing what they have to work with. Also, it's very hard to get character to your voice. (Vocal Fry, Distortion etc.) And, if done wrong, will destroy your voice. Singers from AC/DC and Guns N' Roses would now have trouble singing clearly, as they have done it too much. That's why you have to use it only sometimes.

I'm gonna say just do the lesson since if you gonna start to make a single, album, and stuff, it'll probably be easier to deal with you vocal if you can control your pitch, distortion and stuff since its very, very annoying to autotune someone's voice lol.

skrt-lord : Auto-tune? Who said anything about that. I already can sing, but I have a choir voice... if you will. My issue is that my voice is just a clear blank slate. I can show emotion, but I don't have anything to make it recognizable. I, also, do not plan to make records or original songs. (I want to do covers, but not really original, since I'm not good at writing music.)

darthyoda : NO NO NO, don't get me wrong, i didn't mean to say that you'll need to autotune your vocal, im just saying if you're into making music and stuff having a good vocal record and do not need to fix the pitch, muddyness and stuff is really gonna save you a lot of times. And its really worth it to take the lesson especially if its free (heheheh) cause somebody, probably a producer gonna hear you sing one day and decided to produce for your and you'll start getting your tracks into the ITunes chart and stuff lol.
