It’s Christmas Story Week! (Day 6)

Ages: 9+

(All names of existing people are changed due to privacy)

“We (my mom, dad, sister Tiffany and I) got a box from the mayor, as a reward for helping the mayor. I don’t know what he meant with ‘helping’, but I assumed it was for giving permission. But once we looked inside the box, we saw something. There was $100 inside, as well as a few unused candles, a few Christmas baubles, a letter and some books. Still, it wasn’t heavy. I wondered how that was possible... Such a fair weight weighs nothing now.

Amy: “A letter?”
Bruce: “Maybe it’s from the person who sent this!”
Amy: “But... Should we accept it?”
Bruce: “Let’s take a look at the letter first.”
Amy: “Alright.”
Mom opened the letter and started to read it.
Amy: “Oh my... The writer has a pretty accurate handwriting. “Dear McKinsey family, my friend Joshua McKinsey and I were friends until a few days ago. We had a crush on the same person and Joshua already confessed to her...”
Mom stopped reading. I was in an awkward moment now; Mom found out Kimberly and I have a relationship. And dad was at the scene too, so he heard that as well. I looked at Tiffany. Then I looked at my parents.
Bruce: “So... you and Kimberly have a relationship?”
Joshua: “Y-yes... Dad...”
I blushed a bit.
Bruce: “Are you ashamed now?”
Joshua: “Uh... Kind of...”
Amy: “Well, that’s not needed... We’re your parents. And you can tell anything and ask anything to your parents.”
Dad came up to me. Tiffany was going to the kitchen and grabbed something to eat.
Bruce: “If you need any help, we’ll be there for you.”
Joshua: “Alright... Thanks...”
Amy: “But don’t do crazy stuff, okay?”
Joshua: “I won’t...”
Mom continued reading the letter.
Amy: “I’ll continue. “...we had a fight over the phone and I said he wasn’t welcome at my house anymore. And I said I hope he got in trouble at home. I regret saying those things now. As this letter is about Joshua, if he’s near... Tell him I’m sorry about everything. I want to celebrate Christmas without any trouble and with my friends... And Joshua is one of those who may come. Greetings from Alfie.” Wow, this letter is from your friend.”
I was surprised. Alfie let me know he was angry two days ago or even yesterday... And he regrets everything he said. If it’s another joke of him, I would be angry... But I assumed it was serious.
Joshua: “Wow...”
Amy: “You two had a fight?”
Mom looked at me. She looked confused.
Joshua: “Well... Not really.”
Amy: “Tell us what happened, Joshua.”
Joshua: “Well, I had a phone call when Kimberly was here. And it was Alfie, who said he liked Kimberly as well. And he found out Kimberly and I have a relationship, and then he became mad.”
Amy: “I think you should go to him and make up for what happened, then.”
Tiffany went up to our mom.
Tiffany: “Mom, can I go to Khalil? He asked me to help him with his homework."
Amy: "Sure, Tiffany. But be home at 15:00 PM, okay?"
Tiffany: "Okay!"
Tiffany grabbed her jacket and ran outside. She closed the door and ran to Khalil, one of her friends. Meanwhile, mom, dad and I were discussing about the fight between Alfie and me. Once we were done 10 minutes later, I asked my parents if I could go to Alfie to apologize. And if he invites me, I can't say no. My parents said yes, so I went to Alfie... Actually, I first went to Kimberly. I wanted to check how she was doing and I wanted to ask if she wanted to come with me to Alfie’s house. I put on some warm clothing and went outside. It was snowing a lot. Like it will never let through any sunshine to let the snow melt away. I went to Kimberly’s house but on my way, I saw a kitten in a box.
Joshua: “Oh god.”
I ran up to the kitten, and approached it slowly when I was close. I mostly want to help animals in need, but I just can’t because they say “I’m not that type”. Once I was one footstep away from the kitten, I went to my knees. I saw how dirty its black-white fur was. Glad it only was dirty and not missing something. Like a paw. Anyway, I saw the kitten was scared. Probably because of the reason why its left alone.
Joshua: “Hey, kitty...”
I started to pet the kitten. It seemed to be friendly. I saw no folders with the kitten before and I don’t see a collar or something... Or was that with dogs? I don’t know anymore. Either way, I tried to calm the kitten and once it indeed got calmer, I picked it up.
Joshua: “Poor thing... You were left all alone...”
The kitten seemed to be a few weeks old. It must have been in a terrible start. I went up from my knees while holding the kitten and I continued to go to Kimberly’s home. Meanwhile, I noticed the kitten was a female. So I had to come up with a girl name for her. 6 minutes later, once I found out what name I should give to the kitten, I looked around. I was in an unknown street. I walked too far... but how far is ‘too far’ now? I looked back and behind me weren’t even street lights I would remember. Geez, I only thought for 6 minutes...
Joshua: “Geez. I went too far... What do you think, Jessie?”
Yes, I named the kitten Jessie. I thought it would fit. I looked in front of me again and saw an old person sitting on a bench. It appeared to be an old man and he was giving bread to some pigeons. I went up to him. I saw he had a hateful face, but I assumed that was just the way he was born.
Joshua: “Uh... Sir?”
The man looked at me. The look in his eyes make clear he doesn’t have his day today. I did saw a name tag on his jacket: Harold Millerton. I was wondering why he had a name tag.
Joshua: “I-is this kitten... yours?”
Harold: “...”
Nope, it’s hopeless. That Harold either ignores me or is focused on the ducks too much. I decided to turn around and go away. But I heard Harold say something. I turned my head back and didn’t hear it well. I went back to him.
Joshua: “Uh... I didn’t hear what you said, sir... Can you please repeat that?”
Harold: “I said: No, her owners passed away recently.”
Joshua: “Oh... That’s not good to hear... Were they people you knew?”
Harold: “Definitely.”
“Definitely”? I’ve met a lot of rude people, but Harold is sounding the rudest.
Joshua: “And... What happened to them, if I may ask?”
Harold: “Well, my son and his very beloved Kayla Flowerfield recently moved to another country. But in the plane flight to France, something went wrong: Someone grabbed a weapon and appeared to have been eliminating every single person in there... Including himself.”
I couldn’t believe what he just said. But it was on the news too, so I can’t deny what he said. Such a tragic story... Wait, how did he know that?
Joshua: “And... How did you know that?”
Harold: “Because... I was there, going to France for an article for the newspaper company I work for. And once that freak took over control, I was hiding in the toilet. I remember a very hard splash and it appeared we crashed in the ocean. I went out of the toilet and I had a lucky moment: France was already in sight. I swam to the nearest beach of France and went to the police. But they arrested me right away.”
Joshua: “But... You were going to report the crash... right?”
Harold: “Yes.”
Joshua: “But... How could the police arrest you?”
Harold grabbed an old newspaper from 20 years ago. He gave it to me.
Joshua: “Huh? “Harold Millerton still not caught for his crimes”?! So you were a criminal?!!”
Harold: “You said it: I WAS a criminal. As you can see at my clothes and name tag, I got a job at the local newspaper. I get paid well and I’m not enjoying crimes anymore.”
I was very skeptic about that. But he still is speaking the truth: Something in my memory tells me I saw his name really small on a well sold newspaper for a second, near an article. And if I get that feeling, it surely happened. I suddenly realized I had to ask Kimberly if she wanted to come with me to Alfie’s house.
Joshua: “Uh, Mr... Uh...”
Harold: “Call me Harold.”
Joshua: “Right... Uh, I have to go now. I need to ask something to my girlfriend, you see.”
Harold: “I see. I have to thank you, though.”
I actually turned around half, but once I wondered why he thanked me, I turned back.
Joshua: “May I ask why?”
Harold: “Well, it’s rare I get into a conversation with someone these days. So thank you. It’s been 5 months since I last talked with people, though I was outside a lot.”
Joshua: “5 months?”
Harold: “Yes. 5 Months. I only talk with the pigeons and the ducks in the park, but they won’t talk back.”
I actually now realize how hard Harold’s life must have been. He looks like he’s 65. I wonder who his son is before he died. Still a horrible story to hear before Christmas...
Joshua: “Wow... Well, sometimes I’m lonely too. But I always think positive.”
Harold looked at me with his grumpy face. It indeed was just that way he looked like.
Harold: “I’ll remember that.”
Joshua: “Anyway, I really need to go now.”
Harold: “Alright. We’ll meet again.”
I turned around and went back. I was still holding Jessie, who was asleep. I still can’t believe I rescued a kitten who had no reason to be homeless. But all pets have no reason to be homeless. But I absolutely can’t believe I’ve met a retired criminal as well. Kayla Flowerfield... That was that Harold’s son’s “beloved one”? Didn’t he mean wife? Or girlfriend? Anyway, once I was at Kimberly’s house (at last), I rang the doorbell. Kimberly opened the door, and she held a bowl of cornflakes. This time, I was the one who came while she just woke up.
Kimberly: “Hi, Joshua!”
Joshua: “Hi Kimberly! I found this poor kitten on the streets.”
I gave Jessie to Kimberly. She took Jessie from me and put down her bowl with cornflakes on the floor. I suddenly heard a growl from inside Kimberly's house.
Kimberly: “Aww, she’s adorable!”
Joshua: “Eh... Do you have a dog?”
Kimberly: “No, I don’t. Why?”
Kimberly was petting Jessie a lot. She fell in love with Jessie already.
Joshua: “Well, I heard a loud growl.”
Kimberly: “Oh! That might be me. I wasn’t even starting my cornflakes and you rang the bell. So I didn’t have any time to eat so far.”
She giggled.
Kimberly: “But she’s so cute! What’s her name?”
Joshua: “Well, I couldn’t know her name. So I called her Jessie.”
Kimberly: “Jessie? That’s a nice name.”
Joshua: “I know, right? Uh... Can I come in?”
Kimberly: “Sure!”
Kimberly stepped aside, but she stepped on her bowl with cornflakes. The result was that she slipped and the bowl got smashed against a closet at the left of my sight in Kimberly’s house. The bowl broke and Kimberly dropped Jessie by accident. Good thing cats always land on their feet, but I can’t say that to Kimberly. She slammed on the ground, with her back in the pool of milk and the shattered cornflakes. Her current clothing were a pink, sleeveless shirt with heart print and some jogging pants. I stuck out my hand.
Joshua: “Eh... Need any help?”
Kimberly: “Ow... I’m fine...”
Kimberly went up already. She looked at me.
Kimberly: “Thanks anyway!”
She went to the living room in her house and I followed her. Her house looked almost like my house. She told me she would put on her normal clothes upstairs. And she did, so i waited. Once she came back 7 minutes later, she went on the couch and I went next to her. We were listening to the silence. Nothing happened and nothing made a sound. Suddenly, Kimberly turned her head to me.
Kimberly: “Joshua?”
Joshua: “Yes?”
Kimberly: “What actually was the reason you came?”
Joshua: “Well... Alfie is hosting a party. And I thought it would be nice to go there. But I won’t go without you. It would be perfect for Christmas. So... What do you think?”
