I was assigned to make a survey that deals with mental health myths for my psychology class. I know there are a lot of controversial mental health myths/issues out there, so I decided to stick with something dry and simple. This type of thing would be perfect to share on social media, however, I don't have any social media accounts, so I thought I would try posting it here to collect some responses. The survey is really straightforward and there is really only one question that deals with the mental health myth topic, the rest are just questions that will provide me with some demographic information that I'll compile and use later.

This survey is for purely academic purposes, and the information here will not be used in any unethical way outside of its intended purpose: collecting data that will later be analyzed for my psychology class. The myth this survey is about is in the title of this thread and the google form.

Feel free to post your thoughts/opinions about the myth below (although you really don't have to). Also be sure to answer each question truthfully. Thank you!

If this type of thing isn't allowed, then this thread can be closed/trashed.

Local Mods :

You can close this thread, it's been quite a while since I created it and it's pretty clear that no one else is going to reply to this, so it doesn't serve much of a purpose by being open. I've long since turned this assignment in for a grade XD

Thank you Yuna1000 for replying to the survey, I really appreciate it XD

Razor-987 : Ah. I remember doing things like this. It's a good little survey, but having done this before (last year), one little piece of advice that I can give you is to not just give the individual the options to say 'yes' or 'no' as this will not fit all people. It may be helpful to, in the future, add something that's in between (although not 'I don't know' as this will give you no usable information). You could try something like, "Some forms of mental illness may be prevented, but not others". This is because some types of mental illness have been shown to be preventable, but some are linked to genetics and can't be. This accommodates the people who would neither say yes or no, and looking at your survey, it didn't really accommodate that factor.

Also, you could ask about the education that the individual has received (e.g. whether they went to university or not) or what job they hold (will an individual with a job that requires more qualifications, or a job that could be considered to be elite, respond differently to an individual who perhaps has a job with lower pay or requires less qualifications (e.g. doctor vs farmer). Through this, you can see what kinds of people respond in what ways, and whether those with a lesser education or a 'menial' job may respond more positively or negatively than another group. It gives you more options to discuss and more evidence to present, so you'll most likely receive a higher grade for the work.

Also, you should watch what you call a myth. People might take offence to the fact that you're referring to aspects of mental health as myths. Perhaps you could use the word 'Dilemma', instead. It's more commonly used and sounds a bit more professional.

EagleTsubasa :

I know exactly what you're talking about. Unfortunately though, my professor just wanted us to research a mental health myth and use it as the basis for our survey, he didn't want us to modify it in any way. It just so happens that the options for the mental health myth I chose had very vague answers that don't encompass everyone's opinions and beliefs on the matter.

Believe me, if I were assigned to create a survey of my own, I would not have provided only yes or no as the answer choices because not everyone will fall under those choices. Everything you have pointed out is very solid advice, but I was given very specific guidelines and I wasn't allowed to tamper with the myth in any way that would potentially skew or distort the question being asked. I appreciate your feedback on this though, you gave some really great pointers

No. Mental issues will always be with us and I think it is if anything going to increase over time. There will always be variants of a mental disease or a new classification of a mental disease. Think about road rage. That may not be a mental illness in itself, but it exists. PTSD is another example. You might know the story when Patton smacked a soldier because he thought the soldier was faking the PTSD because he was showing cowardice.

This whole Trans thing could be considered a mental illness as well. It is a bit of an easy out for some people to say they are something else and getting people to accept their explanation. I do not think mental illness will ever go away,it will always exist in some form an has since the beginning of time.

Razor-987: Glad to know being me being confined to a classroom, forced to learn from teachers who didn't treat us like adults was useful to somebody. I'll never use this information. XD
