My mom broke her toe (again) one day last week, and three hours later just said "Oh yeah, I broke my toe before we went to the doctor earlier".
Seriously mom? How did you break your toe and never even be so bothered as to say anything about it until three hours later...EVEN AFTER WALKING FOR A HALF HOUR? Yeah, and then the nonchalance of it all. "Btw, I broke my toe a few hours ago. Haha". ._. How? Just...how? If it were me I'd probably have been in tears and maybe shouting.

Of course it bears mentioning this isn't the first time she's acted like this over a broken bone. I remember her running to the living room one day when I was a kid and she kicked something and just kept running because she was in a hurry to get to the front room. After she had done what she came in there for she looked down and said something like "Ow. Yep, broke that toe" then walked calmly back to the kitchen and resumed her cooking and cleaned afterward.

Twice I've seen her break her leg (she's very accident prone, so maybe the tolerance is a self defense mechanism lol) and she never said much about those either, other than asking to be helped back into the house (fell off a porch both times). All this and she always kept on working around the house while most would of course be going to the hospital asap.

And that's not even talking about all of the pain she goes through everyday from physical issues I won't go into here. I am consistently amazed by this woman's pain tolerance. I take her injuries worse than she does! Lol

So how about you? How high is your pain tolerance? Are you like me in that you can take a fair amount of pain? Or are you like my mom and you can break a bone and keep on holding a conversation without even reacting? Or maybe you carry on like mad from the slightest bump or scratch?

I'm not really sure because I've never really had it tested and I have nothing to compare it to. I'm fairly certain I've never broken a bone. There were a couple of times I was stung by a red paper wasp and I just kinduh ran around in a circle for a couple minutes. Another time I was running around in the front yard barefoot, which was pretty normal for me then, and I impaled my heel on a dull metal rod that was sticking out of the dirt. It wound up getting infected and I had to have my mom lance it with a safety pin twice. It took a while to heal and for about two week I had to walk around on the ball of my right foot. Having it lanced actually felt worse than the initial wound. There was a time I chickened out of climbing up a tree and I gashed my left upper calf open on a sharp twig on the climb down. That one didn't actually hurt so bad, it just freaked me out because I was bleeding everywhere. I also seem to be developing inflammation in my knees which can be a bit discouraging when trying to crouch, jump or run and the occasional migraine has a way of robbing me of any functionality for a few hours. I've been attacked and ripped open by cats multiple times but it always flips the rage switch enough to draw my attention away from the pain. Oh, I almost forgot about the time I dealt with an infected ingrown toenail for 2 years straight. That one was unpleasant, but not crippling.

I think it really comes down to the different kinds of pain. There's throbbing, radiating, shooting, stabbing etc. and another factor would be how long you've dealt with said pain. For example, I know someone with Multiple Sclerosis who doesn't show any signs of being in pain at all.

I'm mentally prepared for all kinds of pain, though I can't say I've had it stress-tested yet. I'm pretty sure I have a high tolerance anyways, but I can't be sure.

I'll let you know next time

Well I spoke to you about this in the pm to be sure big bro. As you know well I can handle a lot of pain. Not sure how or why myself maybe because of god? These things we really need to think about since I find them a complete mystery in life. Not everyone can and it can break them to the point they won't be able to go on. Or fight, and bear with the pain and make use of your life.

Well, I used to be like Eirinn's mom, and to some extent still am, just not nearly as much. Years of painkiller abuse lessened my ability to endure pain, since I was numb for so long, but it's still there.

The first example that comes to mind is I had a friend take his cigarette and press it against the back of my hand for a few seconds when I was paying attention to something else. Once I felt it, I looked over at him and literally said "Ow" as dull as can be without blinking or anything lol. It took a few weeks for that hole in my hand to completely heal. We both got a good laugh out of that XD

I can honestly say that I can take it for several minutes when my cat decides to lick my hand.  What?  He's got a very rough tongue!

My pain tolerance is very low if you're asking how much something has to hurt before I take notice of it-case in point, the cat dug one of his claws in when he decided he was tired of laying on his side and licking my hand.  Once upon a time people honestly believed that sensitivity of skin was a primary indication of intelligence, so I guess I can claim that's not a bad thing.  I've never yet found a pain that actually debilitated me, though... when I was moving furniture, reached the stopping point and the person on the other end didn't agree until they had forced the cabinet leg right up my foot to peel the entire great toenail off, that was very irritating.  I still managed to limp around just fine.

This is a hard question because I don't know how to compare myself to others. Pain hurts, usually a lot. It's not something I like, I'm not a cutter, I'm not into doing painful things for the fun of it.

Saying that, I'll take something to cut down on pain any day. I don't look for it and I'd rather have the drugs to make it hurt less, whatever it is.

Saying THAT, I'm into fitness. I love distance running and speed running and running has taught me to manage pain and discomfort and look at it from a distance. I'll feel pain and I'll examine it in my mind. I'll turn it over and around in my head and decide how I feel about it. Sometimes I can't help it and I scream like a little girl. Sometimes I fake it long enough to pretend like I'm stronger than I am.

For example, I was pepper-sprayed in the Marines for training. That, to this day, is the most vivid flash of pain I have ever had. It hurt, a lot. It burned, I couldn't see or breathe, and it was a bad time. Then we did an course for strikes and weapon retention. It was one of the hardest things to do and pepper spray doesn't just go away. It lingers a long time. I showed a lot of weakness that day.

Today I am staying home because I managed to pick up hand, foot, and mouth disease from the virus my daughters had. It sucked to be them but my feet and hands are swollen and they itch and hurt at the same time. I can't drink or eat a whole lot because I have lesions inside my mouth that sting me when I try to take anything orally. I'm dealing with it and I'm not complaining about it but it sucks. I don't enjoy it. I can take it because there's really no other option.

So, to answer the question: Low. I'll do anything at all costs to avoid pain. It's not for me.

I have a high pain tolerance.

I once broke my leg and didn't know I had broken it. The only time it started to hurt is when I tried to stand back up on it fell down and sit on the broken leg again. I also broke my foot one time and didn't know it was broke till it started to swell and x-ray showed it.

I think my high tolerance comes from my Autism. With Autism you either have a high pain tolerance or a low pain tolerance. Then again pain is part of the neurological system as their are receptors. As one of my professors once said we may never understand pain. Some people are very tolerant of pain others or not. He then gave his own personal story.

I've never had any serious accident or broken any part of my body, so I can't really know.

The only things I've suffered are either muscular injuries, minor wounds (even if the scar is still visible 15 years later) and of course injections. Through time and experience, neither of this hurts anymore, even when my mom says that the same muscular injury makes her fall to the ground.

As much as my curious side would like to know how much tolerance I really have, some things are better kept a secret, specially those who harm myself, and even more those that can harm myself severely. If I had to make a bet, it would probably be low, so one more reason to not confirm anything.

I would say I have an average to high tolerance for pain. Thankfully I have not had any serious injuries, but one sticks out.

I was working as a dishwasher and I was carrying back some used pizza pans to wipe down. One of the hot pans slid off the stack and hit my neck and it did hurt,I just put some water on it and went on my way. Then a waitress walks up to me and asks,"Doesn't that hurt?" as I was working. I really paid it no mind until she said that. I went to the bathroom and found a nice 2-3 inch (or for our metric users 5-7.5cm) burn mark on my neck. That is when I learned about Vitamin E an how it can heal a burn.

I guess mine would be pretty high. Most people should know of how often I get injured, so I've gotten used to most kinds of pain thanks to being injured so many times. I remember back in middle school I was so lazy that there were some kids who would punch me because I just wouldn't bother with doing anything about it, mainly because the punches didn't actually bother me lol.

Hm… Pain? Physical pain? What is that? oO;; j/k =P Nah, I feel pain like a normal being but I find mental and emotional pain to be worse than physical pain. I was trained to keep going no matter what, but I do know at some point, at some age, physical limitations will catch up with me. lol However, since I'm not exactly a klutz, I can't say I know as much about physical pain than the people that fall on their faces, walk into poles, shoot themselves in the foot, or get hit by parked vehicles. Sometimes I wonder if maybe my dislike for pain is part of the reason why I learned to navigate around things. oO;; I can usually dodge whatever's flying at me, so that's not a problem... it's when I can't dodge because someone else would be hit that really hurts (little kids have such dangerous pastimes).

Anyways, to answer your question, I've been told that my tolerance for pain is pretty high since I don't take meds for anything, even when injured. I figure if I can still move, then it shouldn't be that bad.

to be honest it all depends on the type of pain ... I have a high tolerance for dull pain which tend to stick around for a few hours and then it subsides ... I usually just shrug it off and go on with whatever I'm doing ... I tend to get dull headaches more then sharp ones and while they might last for hours I don't take anything to get rid of them yeah it is annoying to put up with but I knowz in the end it will go away

sharp pain on the other hand I don't tolerate so well I might even yelp or whimper depending on how bad the pain is like a night or two ago I had a very sharp pain in my chest around/near my heart and rib cage I was yelping softly in agony I even cried a little though sadly I had to keep the volume of my yelps/whimpers down because my mom was asleep (my mom doesn't like to be woken up so when I accidently do wake her because I was a bit too loud she will yell at me and cuss at me so yeah I try to avoid waking her up at all costs) the pain got to the point that it hurt to even breathe deeply ... which breathing slowly and deeply is what I normally do to getz rid of chest pain but it didn't work this time

as far as broken bones go thankfully I haven't broken any yet that I knowz of though I think I have some idea of how painful a broken bone can be with what happens to me sometimes ... I don't knowz if it is a tendon or a muscle but what ever it is that is supposed to keep the smaller bone in my lower leg (fibula) and the large bone in my upper leg (femur) together sometimes it fails to do it's job of keeping them together and in line and my fibula pops out of place and goes toward my outer leg which causes me to yelp loudly and scream in pain as if that wasn't enough to deal with I have to grit my teeth and pop it back into place which causes even more pain ... and as if to add insult to injury the leg will try to pop out of place again for the rest of the day so I have to baby it ... sometimes for up to three days after it happened till the leg feels like normal again

I guess that some of you who just read that story are probably wondering haven't you went to see / talk to the doctor aboutz that and the answer is yes actually I have talked to my doctor and my chiropractor aboutz my leg doing that to me and neither of them could give me any answer as to whyz this happens to me they were shocked to hear that it even happens to me since they never heard of anyone else having this problem so I'll just have to put up with it till someone can make head or tails of what is wrong with my leg ... I guess I can be glad that it doesn't happen too often

Jygin :  Actually, I'd be more concerned about the sharp pains in your chest near your heart/rib cage. D= Not to alarm you or anything, but I know of someone that was complaining of chest pains like that and then when they finally got it checked out, it turned out to be a tumor that was pressing on some of their organs (which explained the pain and difficulty breathing). T_T If the pain keeps coming back, or if it gets any worse, I hope you'll consider going to see a doctor, if only to make sure you're okay! D= Take care and hope you feel better soon!

It depends on the type of pain being dealt, I'm not that good at taking physical pain as I'm not that strong.

Emotional pain however, I have a high tolerance.

Yuna1000 : I didn't mean to make you worryz aboutz me D:

I'm completely fine the pain subsided almost as fast as it showed up and it's just a random pain that happens from time to time and it isn't always in that area to be honest that was the first and only time it was in that spot ... it is usually on the other side like one of the muscles inbetween my ribs cage getz knotted up or something and deep breathing always makes the knotted up muscle relax back to normal this was just the only time that deep breathing actually made the pain feel worse rather then make it better ... it wasn't that I couldn't deep breath but more that it aggravated the pain more then it was helping so I just stayed motionless till it subsided and nowz everything is fine I promise ^^

I thank you for your concern though it is reallyz sweet of you to ask aboutz me and make sure that I'm ok I appreciate it Yuna

m0ssb3rg935 : I don't often need pain tolerance for injuries or physical ailments, but I have been through some seriously painful things - Thankfully I don't remember most of them (like cutting my toe off). I did shove a piece of metal up into my hand as a kid. It was a broken antenna and I tried to use it as a golf club if I recall correctly. It hurt pretty badly and left a circle shaped cut deep in my hand...but boy that imaginary ball sure did fly. O__O Best drive ever.

yoshirulez! : Thanks. You do that, Fred.

Eniitan : Hmm... You know, I would say it's definitely something to do with God. It may be that He knows who will need it (say if they have physical ailments like my mom or to an extent, myself), or if He just puts it in us to build a tolerance to pain, especially chronic pain. Who knows? I once had a friend who felt almost no pain. She said she gashed her head open as an infant and never cried, even laughed while they stitched it up. ._. I think that must have been some sort of neurological thing though. Most people who can take a lot of pain usually at least feel it (like us), they can just handle it better than a lot of others. Mine is mostly learned.

Mynamescox44 : Ouch. And you said something that I've always wondered about... You said your pain tolerance isn't as high as it once was because of painkiller abuse. I never take anything regardless of pain, even when my mom almost literally begs me to. I just don't do it. I wonder if that has something to do with my tolerance of pain. Heck, I'm hurting right now and have been for hours, but eh. Whatever.
Still, I can't imagine having that high of a resistance to pain man. You are tough. Lol

Noyb42 : Cats are evil. I know mine is sometimes anyway. xD I've grown nearly immune to the pain of being scratched since I grew up with several cats around and well, that just kind of happens when cats are around. Now I just get aggravated.
And yeah how much you can handle without having to stop or crying like a baby is basically what I was getting at. I can't imagine how that toenail thing must have felt.

Ghostbear1111 : Like I said to a user or two above, I won't take anything for pain at all unless I absolutely have to. I've taken medicine twice since I got old enough to make that call on my own (excluding once when I was literally deathly sick and had no real consciousness of anything and they gave me medicine). Once it was Tylenol and once it was Ibuprofen. Oh I also used a cough drop once. I can get why you would choose not to though. Pain is no fun.

tornadocam : Yikes man! I have no clue how you could handle that without even knowing really. You can definitely take more pain than me.

EX Palen : Your post actually made me laugh. As the Irish say: some questions are better left unanswered, and some answers are better left unquestioned. Let's you and I leave the "How well can I handle incredibly high levels of pain?" question unanswered for hopefully our entire lives. I know from my back that I can take a good amount of it, but I'm not sure how that pain stacks up against other kinds of pain, nor do I want to know.

Oldschool777 : Burns are bad man. I've only had three: once coming in contact (accidentally of course) with the burning end of someone's cigarette, once when I touched a hotplate to see if it was hot (don't ask), and once when I was cooking and was splashed with boiling oil. The latter of the three went something like this:
Mom: Don't just drop it in!
Me: Did she say just drop it in?...Okay... *drops*
You can figure the rest. Lol

zanderlex : zander's recipe for higher pain tolerance: Laziness + Clumsiness. Shake well and BOOM. You can take the licks like a pro.

Yuna1000 : "Get hit by parked vehicles" xD I once saw someone fall UPstairs. Is that close?
Also I agree that emotional pain is worse. I can take a decent amount of it too, but it's harder than physical pain and seems more debilitating. Like you, I just learned to go on despite pain. Rarely do I show I hurt.

Jygin : Ow! That post hurt to read. Lol I can't imagine that happening to my leg (I seriously found myself covering my leg with my other one as a protective gesture while typing this xD). I'm not sure how well I could take that, and I don't want to find out! Hopefully that doesn't ever happen to you again. :/

18mlivingston : I can probably take more physical pain than emotional, but I can take more emotional pain than I'd care to admit. More than I care to admit because I've learned to take it by experiences that I'd rather forget. I'm sure you can identify with that given your post.

Eirinn : Oh wow that's amazing.... she opened her head as an infant never cried and even laughed while they stitched it back up? That has to be like the work of god if its not then I dunno what is. Yeah it makes me to think a lot based on that, I also like the replies people have posted on this thread. You get to learn more about different things and how people handled it on their own.

I have a pretty high pain tolerance. I just go to the point where I'm happy. I used to have tatts from my neck to hands and to waist on frontside and backside; I got most of them removed with laser srgery and let me tell you the laser hurts worse than the tat gun.
