While tomatoes are fruit, they culinarely are concidered vegitables, as they are cooked and eaten so. A carrot is a root, but culinarely is aslo a vegitable.

With fruit, the scientific and culinary terms often coinside... but there are many exceptions, such as tomatoes and cucumbers, which are scientifically fruit (at least the part we eat is), but eaten as vegitables.
